Sassy and down to earth despite being born in space, all Leina Ashta ever wanted was for her brother and her to go to school and live upstanding lives. Unfortunately the conditions of Shingri-La and the absence of their parents made it not to be; as her brother became a junk dealer for her sake and despite her constant protests; taking on both dubiously legal and outright felonious jobs. By chance, this eventually led to them both being thrust into the First Neo-Zeon War, in which Leina quickly became a hostage of Axis Zeon in their various schemes against her brother and the Argama. Thought dead, but in truth rescued by Sayla Mass, she's been her ward ever since her brother left for Jupiter. Now a no-nonsense and much wiser young woman under her tutelage who still retains her propensity to call out anyone for their misbehavior, she's looking to enter the university next year. Despite having awakened as a powerful Newtype years ago, she has absolutely no desire to ever pilot a mobile suit if she can help it, having witnessed the wanton destruction they can cause first hand.

Background

  • Born in the Shangri-la Colony on Side 1. Most of her childhood memories are of her and her older Brother Judau. Their parents were barely a factor.
  • Judau becomes a junk dealer to try and support her and fell in the orbit of Elle, Beecha, Mondo, and Lino. Leina continually tries to yank him out of that life with almost zero success.
  • The Argama comes to town. Judau tries to steal the Zeta. After many hijinks, sees an opportunity for him to have a more respectable life and schemes to get him in the Argama's crew. It only sticks after she quits school and joins the crew herself. Meets Roux Louka, who makes quite an impression on her.
  • Becomes a crew member of the Argama and the AEUG briefly. Since she was a child herself, mostly cooked, did laundry, worked on crew morale, wrangled chickens, tried to manage a hostage situation with said chicken and tried to defuse various schemes that were always afoot.
  • In a case of mistaken identity, gets taken hostage by Glemy Toto, who believed she was actually Roux Louka. Rather than treat her as a prisoner of war, Glemy decides to groom her to become a 'Lady of Neo-Zeon' by teaching her table manners, the piano, ballet, ballroom dancing, and many other skills of the Upper Class.
  • Gets tied to a mobile suit by Gottn when Glemy isn't around to try and draw her brother out. Gottn is a jerk.
  • Meets Elpeo Puru during all of this. The two have a complicated and at times a quite traumatic relationship, due to Elpeo's fixation on Judau and the perception that Leina casually possesses what she desires.
  • Debuts as a 'Lady of Neo-Zeon' during a Neo-Zeon ball held in Dakar, the Earth Federation Capital. Truly awakens as a Newtype, has an existential crisis on the nature of adulthood. During a rescue attempt made on her by Judau and a tense confrontation with Haman Karn, steps between the two to protect him and is shot.
  • Manages to escape Dakar, only for Elpeo Puru to try and lead her away while she's still critically injured for another tense confrontation. Judau talkes Elpeo down and convinces her to become part of their family. However... a mobile suit crashes on a hut Leina was in during the aftermath and she was thought to be dead.
  • In truth, rescued by Sayla Mass. The gunshot wound goes septic, and she has a lengthy recovery phase. During this time frame on occasion she connected with Judau and the Nahel Argama crew in space with her own Newtype abilities, which led them to the belief she wasn't actually dead.
  • The War ends, she reveals she's alive before Judau and Roux leave for Jupiter on a lengthy contract with the Jupiter Energy Fleet, and meets Puru-Two who promptly goes missing afterwards. Stays behind on Earth and becomes the ward of Sayla Mass, is raised by her throughout her teens in AEU Spain.
  • Discovers a love of books and the theater. Briefly does track, and joins her school's swim team. Falls out of love with anything Glemy Toto might have taught her during her time in Axis, becomes more and more disenchanted with the Federation, high society, and society's view of adulthood.
  • In Sayla's orbit, meets a lot of the Shuffle Alliance and the older generation of heroes, including Master Asia briefly before his betrayal. Fields the fallout that Axis caused within Sayla's life. Is on occasion visited by Elpeo's ghost who tries to encourage her towards finding and reuniting her 'sisters'.
  • Dates Shiro Kabuto, becomes close to him and the Mazinger Crew as a result. However, his decision to lean hard into his role as the OCU's ace pilot causes the two to become more and more distant until they decide mutually break up. The two remain close friends.
  • Judau returns!!! Roux returns!!! Puru-Two returns and now has the name Callisto Diana!!! She is understandably, thrilled.

Resources

  • Many. While she's a civilian, she's in Sayla's orbit, which means that she has access to numerous resources should she need them. Despite this, she tries not to take advantage of her and tries to use them judiciously.
  • She's aware the Shuffle Alliance exists, and knows how to directly contact them, as well as having a number of members on speed dial.
  • Is a really good shot with many small firearms. Did you really think Sayla wouldn't teach her how to shoot a gun???
  • Has stayed in touch with most characters from ZZ who remained in the Earth Sphere.

Relationships

Family
  • Judau Ashta: Her big brother, and the most important person in her life. No matter how much things change in her life, some things stay the same. That’s a great comfort to her, but it’s also a source of endless (affectionate) frustration. While she does worry about the feelings that drove him to leave for Jupiter and how much they still linger, for now she's just enjoying having him as a part of her life once more. He may frustrate her often, but he's a good brother to her, and she's never thought otherwise.
  • Sayla Mass: Leina’s Guardian who saved her life and has raised her for the past eight years. In many ways shaped the young woman that Leina’s become. She has endless affection for her, but Sayla remains a constant source of frustration. She knows she’s not truly been happy since Axis, and she’s bound and determined to help her heal, no matter what it takes. Unfortunately, that drive in many ways is also a barrier, as Sayla is just as determined to curb Leina’s self-sacrificial tendencies. All she wants is want the wounds of Axis to heal, but recently she stumbled on the horrific idea that she's mourning not just Amuro Ray, but Char Aznable as well. What could this mean for Sayla's happiness? Right now she's determined to make up for a recent violation of her trust.
  • Elpeo Puru: Ask Leina on any given day how she remembers this girl, and it will force her to recall some of the worst days of her life. However, Judau convinced this girl to become family with them, and Leina honors that to this day. While her feelings remain mixed in many ways, after her death she started regarding her as a little sister. Her spirit sometimes still visits Leina, charging her with the responsibility of reuniting her living ‘sisters’ – a daunting task for a girl who has chosen to remain on the sidelines when it comes to fighting.
  • Callisto Diana: The two met only briefly prior to her disappearance, and during that visit Leina showed her only distance as she had not yet processed all her feelings regarding her and Elpeo. Her disappearance though instantly made her regret not immediately accepting her, as she poured so much of her time contacting old friends to try and track her down. Now that she’s returned safely, she’s trying to rectify that immediately, as she’s proud of her and the life she’s made for herself. While the two are still new to each other’s lives, Leina regards her as a little sister and found she was able to confide certain things in her that would be uncomfortable to divulge to anyone else so very easily.
  • Nidaime: A frequent visitor to the Mass Villa. Leina knew Nidaime since back when she in physical therapy after her wounding. However back then she thought she was a poorly socialized War Orphan, not a Kaiju! She took it upon herself to try and teach her how to function around people. Now the little Kaiju considers her to be a big sister figure in her life, and Leina falls into the role of caring for her each time she pops into their home.
Argama Crew and AEUG (First Neo Zeon War)
  • Roux Louka: Leina’s always looked up to Roux despite the fact they only knew each other for a short time and considered her a role model in any ways. It’s a great relief to her that Roux remains a part of Judau’s life. She's concerned about a certain wall she felt between them, but has nevertheless entered into a pact to try and manipulate Judau to ask her to marry her and think it was his idea all along.
  • Elle Viano: Of the original Junk Dealer crew from Shangri-la, Elle and Leina got along best, after the war she’s really come into her own. Leina still looks up to her in many ways.
  • Beecha Oleg: It was a surreal moment for Leina to learn that Beecha’s became reliable in her absence. While she’s heard bits and pieces of the story of what changed him, she’s still wonders about the full story to this day.
  • Mondo Agake: Wait really? Mondo too? … No no, it must make sense, she just needs to sit down with him one day and hear the whole story.
  • Lino Abbav: Now /this/ one makes more sense to Leina. She’s glad he’s more able to speak his mind, she remembers the days when this mild-mannered kid got run roughshod over by his friends.
  • Bright Noa: While Leina has a dim opinion of the Federation on their best days, she thinks they made a solid choice appointing Bright to lead Londo Bell. Just, she wishes he would devote a little more time to his family.
  • Fa Yuiry: While she didn’t get to know her very well before she left, Fa and her connected over Leina’s conspiracy to give her brother a better life as well as Fa’s commitment to Kamille’s care. Now after the war, Leina’s tried to remain in touch with her and often calls her up to ask her for advice.
  • Lin Xiahe: “How weary, stale, flat, and unprofitable seem to me all the uses of this world.” The last time she saw her, she was the Magical Laundry Queen, and now she’s a burgeoning villainess. While Leina certainly doesn’t approve; she empathizes with the feelings that drive her. The two share an uneasy understanding, but also a love of theater.
  • The Chicken: The true nemesis of the Argama crew. Nevertheless, Leina looks back on it fondly as sort of the crew’s mascot. Much to the chagrin of everyone who lived through this menace, chickens have become one of her favorite animals over the years.
Shuffle Alliance
  • Rikka Takarada: A girl she met in Tsutsujidai, who turned out to know Sayla quite well - as a pilot! Leina found herself endeared to Rikka and her troubles, and offered what support she can. She finds herself looking forward to talking to her again in the future, but is concerned about how she described her relationship with a certain girl and what that might mean for her. However, after getting to know who she thinks said girl is, she thinks perhaps Rikka may be the only person who can pull someone out of a dark place; and is trying to make her own contribution towards facilitating that.
  • Yuta Hibiki: A boy that she met at Junk Shop Aya in Tsutsujidai. And apparently a friend of Nidaime's too? Their conversation on the state of the outside world grew quite serious, and she finds herself worried about the implications of him being 'created'. It reminds her far too much of some of her old wounds. She is currently concerned about his amnesia and the implications for the future, but the two have bonded pretty well. In particular, about Leina's love of Magical Girls while helping him prep for the Deculture Fest Pageant.
  • Renais Cardiff Shishioh: Leina was drawn to Renais over her obviously deep care over Sayla, and the two bonded over that - and the proper way to make coffee. Eventually it led to the two mutually revealing their trauma, and Leina hopes that learning that people truly care about her and want her in her life will help her begin to move forward.
  • Sousuke Sagara: This high school boy works security for Sayla, and that alone speaks volumes of what he's a part of. However, his inability to connect with people, combined with his focus on survival and military tactics breaks her heart. All she can think of is that a thirteen year old was involved in... a certain event, and how much she hates about the way the world is, that it creates people like him. However, she is relieved that he's now in a better place, and has a lot of faith that the people in his life are bringing joy to his life.
  • Athrusa Hsieh: Athrusa's existential crisis breaks her heart, and while she's done her best to offer her an easy answer for now - she understands implicitly it's more complex. Just what is an Innovade? What does that mean? Either way, she wants to do her best to help her, as she enjoys having her in her life.
  • George De Sand: A noble Gundam fighter, however Leina found she had trouble watching his fights in '92. Having to use funnels in urban areas, even evacuated ones just hit too close to home. She does like and respect George as a person though.
  • Allenby Beardsley: While Leina has a dim opinion on the Gundam fights in general, and the political stakes involved. There's nothing dim about her opinion of Allenby. She's her favorite Gundam fighter, though she found herself horrified to learn she was yet another exploited Cyber Newtype, used as a weapon to win the Gundam fights.
  • Master Asia: She thought of him as a kind, but strict old man in her limited contact with him. She found herself admiring his wisdom and asking him questions about how the world might be changed. His betrayal and plan to cleanse the world deeply shook her, as it reinforced the idea that the state of the world can crush anyone and lead them to the darkest of places.
Friends
  • Shiro Kabuto: Shiro contributed in a large way to being one of the first people in Leina’s age group that made her feel welcome on Earth. The two grew up to be good friends and was Leina’s first long term relationship. Unfortunately, the two grew more distant as Shiro threw himself into his role as the ace of the OCU until they mutually decided to break up. They remain good friends, and a healthy source emotional support for each other.
  • Mamoru Amami: Like Shiro, Mamoru was someone she met when she was new to Earth. He instantly set to making her feel welcome. His boundless optimism and source of cheer was a healing experience for her throughout her early teens. The two remain casual friends, though anytime Leina needs a quick emotional upswing, she knows who to call.
  • Banagher Links: A boy who had a heavy burden forced upon him by his father. The two connected almost instantly, and Leina was charmed instantly by his sincerity and intrinsic kindness. The two are much closer now, and she considers him to be her boyfriend, however she finds herself feeling some trepidation for the speed at which their Newtype bond is developing, especially after Sayla cited the dangers of it. She worries about the wounds Torrington inflicted upon him.
  • Audrey Burne: Recently she found out the Mineva she's been thinking about for eight years was a body double, but while that changes things, she finds it doesn't actually change that much. She had a happier life than she would have under Haman Karn, but the specter of Zeon using her as a banner to rally to still looms. She desperately wants to give her the opportunity to live her own life, but has begun to understand the gravity of her guilt for the sins of her forebears, and her desire to make amends for them.
  • Kamille Bidan: While she didn’t get to know him at all during the First Neo Zeon War, she has made every effort to correct that after the war. Once she turned eighteen, she chose him as her primary care physician. While initially they bonded over Kamille offering her advice for living as a Newtype, now the two find themselves having more and more political discussions every time she comes to his office. Sometimes she sees the angry kid he once was when he gets going. Lately he's turned into even more of an informal advisor, though she has to tell herself that she's not just dumping on him every time she has an appointment at his office.
  • Ramo Marusa: Sayla’s ally in setting up a Yumi Foundation branch in Tsutsujidai. Leina has taken well to the mission of trying to tangibly improve this girl’s life despite recent complications that have made travel to Tsutsujidai more difficult. Leina definitely feels no small amount of guilt for the accidental role she played in changing her life forever. Fortunately, Ramo has told her that she prefers this outcome to ignorance, and the two have become friends. As a result, she's recruited her into her plans of giving Akane a normal neutral space - and perhaps, to help her get together with a certain girl.
  • Renalle Renalle and Leina met while she was being held captive on Axis. They were about the same age, and Renalle was assigned by her mother to help tutor Leina, who was struggling to keep up with her lessons for becoming a Lady of Neo-Zeon. The two were friendly, as only children can be. However, given Glemy's messy coup, she didn't have any hope of Renalle surviving. Imagine her shock when she hasn't just survived, but is alive and is serving on the same ship as Callisto? She finds she couldn't be happier for her.
Friendly Acquaintances
  • Koji Kabuto: She never knew him during his adventurous days, and only as the scientist. As such hearing stories about how he used to be can be surreal to her, as they couldn't seem to be more different. The two are on friendly terms, and while she was worried about his stagnant relationship with Sayaka, the recent news of the Photon Power Labs taking a more active hand in the world makes her think maybe they'll be alright after all.
  • Sayaka Yumi: Leina respects Sayaka a lot for her position as director of the Photon Power Labs. Her work towards solving the world’s power crisis is inspirational. The news that the Photon Power Labs are shifting gears gives her a lot of hope for future happiness, however she still finds that she may need to nudge things along. Koji can be a bit dense, and that's something they both agree upon.
  • Tetsuya Tsurugi: Leina and Tetsuya are fairly friendly as the two were wheelchair bound throughout the same time frame. Leina recovering from her wounds received during the First Neo-Zeon War, Tetsuya from the Mycenae Empire. She adores his relationship with Jun and his emphasis on family, and the two have bonded over their respective experiences.
  • Jun Hono: Like Leina, Jun is a shipper, and the two tend to get along well due to that. Now that she's given birth, she asks for all of her baby pictures, all of them.
  • Anti: A new guest at the Mass villa, Leina’s taken it upon herself to try and make him feel more comfortable during his recovery. She knows that he wants to be a Knight and thinks that’s adorable. While his adjustment to life off the streets has been slow, and there have been a few problems that required some light scolding (and refilling a whole pantry) she’s so far enjoyed having another wild guest around the home. She found herself trying to teach him how to bring warmth to the world shortly before he departed.
  • Ikumi Kaidou: Mamoru’s taciturn best friend. While his reticent nature may be off-putting on the surface, Leina was never fooled by it. One does not hang around Mamoru Amami if one doesn’t enjoy his company. Got a glimpse of how warm he can be once his shell cracks, and understands completely why Mamoru and him get along so well.
  • Hana Hatsuno: Mamoru’s WIFE?! Of nearly ten years!? What??? While she may not understand that aspect of their relationship well, she nevertheless has pushed to try to get to know her better when she can. Thinks they work her far too hard and tries to nudge them towards advocating more time off for her – and themselves for that matter!
  • Guy Shishioh: She's met the King of Braves, mostly from being around Mamoru, but he's been gone from Earth for so long that she doesn't know him especially well. Maybe she'll rectify that soon, Mamoru and Ikumi indicated how hard the GaoGaiGo team is being worked after all.
  • Arriety Hearn: Callisto’s roommate and someone she considers family. She was genuinely touched by the level of support she offered to Callisto upon learning of Marida. Leina thinks the two of them have a lot in common. Eventually she intends to sit down with her for a little chat to see how that holds up.
  • Eight York: The Captain of the Ra Mari, Leina likes her, and is glad that Callisto’s found a home with her and her crew. She’s learned a few details of her life prior to Londo Bell during a tour of her ship, and has decided she wants to get closer to her and her crew.
  • Excellen Browning: Excellen is a lot, but a lot makes her an Excellen(t) distraction. She’s pretty charmed by her behavior so far, and her mere presence in Londo Bell implies a lot about how it’s run. She’s cautiously optimistic about getting to know her better, though she wants to take a harder look at her behavior before she'd take her home to meet the family, so to speak.
  • Ennil El: Ennil was something of a troublemaker back on Axis, and tried to help her escape once upon a time. Recently she found her in Dublin in pursuit of Loni, trying to help her, driven by a whole heap of survivor's guilt. It's a long hill for both of them to climb without miracles, but neither of them wants one.
  • Ako Furuma: Ako is someone Leina finds interesting for her inability to conform even in Tsutsujidai, to Akane's world. As if the world itself is hurting her even there. She finds it fascinating how it took Ramo awakening to the truth, for them to make the leap to be together. In the future, she wants to get to know her better, and is hoping she joins the Yumi Foundation.
  • Alouette Pommier: A victim of Bionet, Leina met her in France while doing relief work for people caught in Akane's Kaiju attack. The two found themselves connecting over how Alouette's past trauma allowed her to see Akane distinctly as someone caught in Bionet's clutches, and seeing her spiral out of control. The two have a shared belief in the world's capacity for kindness, and how it might help them reach a better world.
  • Kaworu Nagisa: She met this boy while hosting a school open day for Nidaime, while they haven't gotten to talk much yet, she has a positive impression over his willingness to lend a hand and play along - as well as his musical knowhow.
Acquaintances
  • Marida Cruz: Leina hasn’t actually met her, but knows she exists on the Garencieres, a Sleeves vessel. While she wants to meet her desperately, she won’t take the risk of falling into Neo-Zeon’s hands again. She is happy at least to hear that the ship’s captain regards her as a daughter, and all that implies.
  • Akane Shinjo: Akane's in an odd space for Leina. Everything about her screams lonely girl in constant retreat from reality, exploited by some 'higher power' or 'authority figure'. She doesn't approve of basically anything she's doing, or how the desperate depths to which she's taking her escapism is harming countless other people. At the same time, she wants to help her, and she knows Sayla is invested in her too. As such, she's started playing a dangerous game to try and manipulate her slowly into a healthier space. She doesn't know if she can, as it relies a lot on being perceived as this neutral figure by her in this fraught situation, but it's worth a try if there's any chance at giving her a real future with the people who actually care about her.
Unfriendly Acquaintances
  • Yuliana Dispersal: While Leina is fascinated by her, and would like to learn more about her, she understands that Yuliana hates her. While she's fairly certain that she's a victim of a Cyber Newtype Lab experiment, and would like to help her, she understands you can't help someone who slaps that hand away. The problem is, she can't get her out of her head, because more and more her behavior makes her think of an Elpeo that grew up and got better at manipulating the people around her. The way she sees the world is disturbing, and not least of all because Leina can almost understand it.
It's Complicated
  • Suberoa Zinnerman: Leina respects the man for what he's done for Marida, however she's also frustrated by how Marida is still fighting for a cause that made her a weapon and brought her so much pain. Like all Zeonic remnants, she wants to convince him to leave that life, and she sympathizes heavily with the reason why he's still fighting to this day. Can he imagine something better for himself? For his daughter? She hopes so.
  • Glemy Toto: While she hated her time in Neo-Zeon as his prisoner, he treated her much better than one would expect of a prisoner of war; and she feels to this day he genuinely cared for her. While that's cold comfort given how he treated his 'creations', she certainly found enough reason to grieve when he died. To this day she has a lot of unresolved trauma that was driven into her from his preparation of her for high society and the expectations of adulthood. There are some things she simply can't enjoy any longer, thanks to him.
  • Amuro Ray: She never met him, but she's witnessed the deep scars he's left upon the people in his life first hand. As a result she can't help but have intensely mixed feelings about him being canonized as some irreproachable hero despite the hopeful message that was sent to the world when Axis ended. Seeing him return empowered by the light of the dawn fills her with dread, because she knows Sayla won't be able to stay away. She promised she'd return, but all she can think about is how he continues to hurt her more and more.
  • Loni Garvey: If we're all bound by the curse of our families, then what does that say about her? Leina wants to believe that she's merely ceding her future to the idea of a curse because she can't imagine better, but is she deluding herself in thinking that's the case? Either way, like all Zeonic remnants, she wants an end to their hatred, and for them to find a better life.
Dislike
  • Haman Karn: She tried to kill Judau, and shot her in the attempt. She was at the center of so much pain and suffering, and left such deep scars on her brother. While Leina feels there was more to her than that demonic pressure, it's hard for her to consider her in a kinder light to this day.
  • Char Aznable: He was willing to kill up to ten billion people to force change and she can think of no more horrible a sacrifice for change than that. More personally though, he crushed Sayla's heart and stole her happiness away from her, and she will never forgive him for that. Now knowing that she's mourning Char, she finds herself confused, and dreading the idea that he might return like Amuro has under the influence of Oath over Omega.
  • Federation Officials: She detests the status quo of the Federation, which she regards as war and violent revolution. The oppression of the poor and the Spacenoid. She's seen into the hearts of its highest officials, and learned how hollow the existence of the political elite class are, and what they'll do for a single morsel of power. Change needs to happen, and in her eyes it must be non-violent, but she understands it is going to be a Sisyphean Task. The human cost is too high to her otherwise.
  • Gottn: A jerk, plain and simple, she's glad he got a chicken to the face. Had her tied to a mobile suit once just to get at her brother, she is very much not a fan of Gottn.
