Dr Sayla Mass has lived what could be considered an eventful life. One of the surviving pilots of the White Base from the One Year War, Sayla retired from the military to complete her medical training. In the following years she created the Yumi Foundation, caring for war orphans, and in UC0083 was appointed the Earth Federation High Commissioner for Refugees, but suddenly resigned in 0085. Since then, she seems to have retired to philanthropic work, living off her familial wealth. In reality, she has been working in an organizational role with the Shuffle Alliance, managing resources and coordinating relief and infrastructure building efforts in the aftermath of Alliance operations. Juggling this with her charitable work and caring for her ward Leina has been difficult, but after the Axis Shock she has taken on the additional burden of piloting. Sayla is personable enough, but guarded and occasionally cold, and it's few who can claim to know the 'real' Sayla Mass.

Background

0062: Born Artesia Som Deikun to Zeon Zum Deikun and Astraea Tor Deikun, in the Republic of Munzo, Side 3, where she grew up with her brother, Casval.
0068: Zeon Zum Deikun is assassinated by Degwin Sodo Zabi. Casval and Artesia are smuggled to Cáceres province on Earth by Jimba and Peta Ral, setting up in a small farmhouse. Given the names Edouard and Sayla Mass by the Rals, who become their adoptive parents. Starts volunteering at refugee camps at a young age.
0075: The Mass house burns down, killing Jimba and Peta, orphaning Edouard and Sayla for a second time. Sayla is sent to a boarding school at Side 5. Edouard disappears not long after.
0076: Sayla Mass enters Medical School in Loum at 14, and excels in her studies.
0079: Sayla commences an internship at a Side 7 hospital, only to get caught up in a Zeon attack, She becomes part of the crew of the White Base, and serves valiantly as one of the pilots of the RX-78-2 Gundam and the FF-X7-Bst Core Booster. She holds the second highest kill count of the White Base pilots, but it pales in comparison to Amuro Ray. She retires immediately after the war, ending her career as an Ensign.
0080: With Side 7 still near destroyed from the war, Sayla starts an internship at a Hospital in Cheyenne, Wyoming on the Britannian Mainland. At the same time, she starts a relationship with fellow White Base Pilot Amuro Ray. While they face media scrutiny for a time, interest in Amuro drops after a few interviews.
0082: After receiving a delayed inheritance meant for her and her brother, and having completed her medical training, Sayla starts practice as a pediatrician. Within a few months, she founds the Yumi Foundation, a charitable organisation aimed at aiding war orphans. The charity quickly grows. and so does it's remit.
0083: In the wake of Operation Stardust, Sayla is appointed Federation High Commissioner for Refugees do to her prominent charity work, vocal stance on the Federation's treatment of the victims of war, and status as a war hero. She takes this position, and attempts to do as much good as she can.
0084: Sayla ends her relationship with Amuro, and moves to Castellon, Spain, where she purchases a villa.
0085: Sayla suddenly resigns from her position as Federation High Commissioner for Refugees. While remembered as passionate and well intentioned, her foray into politics is generally considered to have been mostly for show and she accomplished little- however, in a post-Titans world, it is easy to see many of her attempts at making change were blocked by anti-spacenoid sentiment in the government. Sayla devotes herself to the Foundation full time, though keeps up her medical license in order to aid work on the ground.
0088: Sayla is recruited to the Shuffle Alliance by former Black Joker Tris Sergeyrev, serving as a coordinator and occasional field agent.
0089: Sayla takes in a ward, Leina Ashta, after saving her from nearly dying in the First Neo Zeon Conflict, following Leina's brother Judau leaving for space.
0093: Sayla disappears from the public stage for about three months after the Axis Shock. When she finally returns to the public eye, her charity efforts are redoubled, and more aggressive. She seems even more driven to make change, and the Yumi Foundation helps more people and places than it had in any year prior, with a special focus on victims of Char Aznable's assault on earth.
0094: Returns to piloting in secret as Heart-2 of the recently rebuilt Shuffle Alliance.
0097: Identity as Artesia Som Deikun revealed by Martha Vist Carbine during the fighting at Dakar, later confirmed in a press conference held by the Yumi foundation.

Resources

Newtype: Sayla is a moderately powerful Newtype who awakened during the One Year War, and grew up with the theory and beliefs of Contolism and Newtypes taught to her by Jimba Ral. She may have a slightly better idea of what a Newtype was supposed to be, but her own powers manifest as the standard flash, the ability to guard her own mind, the ability to use psycommu and psycoframe systems, and slight edge on being able to read people. She was also attuned to Casval, and could at times sense his presence and emotion, as well as being able to psychically communicate with Amuro, even if she couldn't initiate. She occasionally gets senses of danger about those she cares about, but recently her powers have started to develop away from her walls and more towards a better sense of those she's close to.

Sayla Mass, MD: Sayla completed her medical degree, with a specialisation in General Paediatrics. Her rotations in ER and Surgery still stick with her, but she decided they wouldn't be her specialisation. And, to be honest- she didn't want to be under that level of pressure again.

Independently Wealthy: Even after giving millions of gilla to be shared with the rest of the White Base crew, Sayla still had access to money. Jimba Ral had prepared for things going wrong, the children's adulthood, and the off-chance assets seized by the Zabi family would be released. Over time, Sayla has accumulated enough money that she would never have to work if she didn't want to, as well as owning a villa in AEU Spain: As much as it's a risk, she couldn't bring herself to move to Neo-Spain.

The Yumi Foundation: Sayla founded the Yumi Foundation primarily to help children like the Ratokie family, who were left abandoned and unable or unwilling to enter the federation system. This was initially a little selfish- It was a way to support Hayato, Fraw and the orphans without making them feel bad about taking Sayla's money, and to maybe assuage Kai's guilt. But there were so many people who needed help, and this little fiction spread into a force for good. Sayla is the Director and CEO of the foundation, but she has people she trusts in the organisation. She also keeps it independent from her resources- if she goes down, she has made sure the Yumi Foundation won't go with her.

Criminal Contacts: Sayla's contact with the criminal world came not from bankrolling Karaba but from the Yumi Foundation. If you want goods transferred to people in war torn zones without them being stolen, you need people who can get them there safely, and people who can keep them safe. If you want to move families whose identities are known- and wanted- you need forgers and spenders. If you want to get money to people who don't exist without leaving a trail, you need people to launder it and to transfer it. It takes a long time to build these contacts, but Sayla has people she can count on if they're paid, even if she doesn't entirely trust them. This is the riskiest part of the Foundation's work, and the most prone to vulnerability, so Sayla needs secrecy. The few of her staff involved in this, the 'Advanced Logistics' team, operate siloed from the rest of the organization, but are paid well. Though, for her own money, Sayla doesn't think that being a criminal is automatically a strike against you- but the reason why you are might be. Unless you're with Bionet.

Basic Weapons and Self Defense Training: As soon as they were old enough, Jimba and Peta Ral taught Sayla and Casval to defend themselves, with firearms and their bare hands. It was primarily 'do this so you can run away', but with the threat of the Zabis, it seemed prudent. Sayla remembered this, and may have been the start of her too hard personality. She is uncomfortable without a handgun to hand.

Political Contacts: Sayla still has a few friends in politics from her time, but she is loathe to lean on them. Still, sometimes it helps having friends in high places. Some of them are additionally corrupt as hell, which comes in handy when you need something authorized. Sayla is too pragmatic to mind.
