Sassy and down to earth despite being born in space, all Leina Ashta ever wanted was for her brother and her to go to school and live upstanding lives. Unfortunately the conditions of Shingri-La and the absence of their parents made it not to be; as her brother became a junk dealer for her sake and despite her constant protests; taking on both dubiously legal and outright felonious jobs. By chance, this eventually led to them both being thrust into the First Neo-Zeon War, in which Leina quickly became a hostage of Axis Zeon in their various schemes against her brother and the Argama. Thought dead, but in truth rescued by Sayla Mass, she's been her ward ever since her brother left for Jupiter. Now a no-nonsense and much wiser young woman under her tutelage who still retains her propensity to call out anyone for their misbehavior, she's looking to enter the university next year. Despite having awakened as a powerful Newtype years ago, she has absolutely no desire to ever pilot a mobile suit if she can help it, having witnessed the wanton destruction they can cause first hand.

Background

  • Born in the Shangri-la Colony on Side 1. Most of her childhood memories are of her and her older Brother Judau. Their parents were barely a factor.
  • Judau becomes a junk dealer to try and support her and fell in the orbit of Elle, Beecha, Mondo, and Lino. Leina continually tries to yank him out of that life with almost zero success.
  • The Argama comes to town. Judau tries to steal the Zeta. After many hijinks, sees an opportunity for him to have a more respectable life and schemes to get him in the Argama's crew. It only sticks after she quits school and joins the crew herself. Meets Roux Louka, who makes quite an impression on her.
  • Becomes a crew member of the Argama and the AEUG briefly. Since she was a child herself, mostly cooked, did laundry, worked on crew morale, wrangled chickens, tried to manage a hostage situation with said chicken and tried to defuse various schemes that were always afoot.
  • In a case of mistaken identity, gets taken hostage by Glemy Toto, who believed she was actually Roux Louka. Rather than treat her as a prisoner of war, Glemy decides to groom her to become a 'Lady of Neo-Zeon' by teaching her table manners, the piano, ballet, ballroom dancing, and many other skills of the Upper Class.
  • Gets tied to a mobile suit by Gottn when Glemy isn't around to try and draw her brother out. Gottn is a jerk.
  • Meets Elpeo Puru during all of this. The two have a complicated and at times a quite traumatic relationship, due to Elpeo's fixation on Judau and the perception that Leina casually possesses what she desires.
  • Debuts as a 'Lady of Neo-Zeon' during a Neo-Zeon ball held in Dakar, the Earth Federation Capital. Truly awakens as a Newtype, has an existential crisis on the nature of adulthood. During a rescue attempt made on her by Judau and a tense confrontation with Haman Karn, steps between the two to protect him and is shot.
  • Manages to escape Dakar, only for Elpeo Puru to try and lead her away while she's still critically injured for another tense confrontation. Judau talkes Elpeo down and convinces her to become part of their family. However... a mobile suit crashes on a hut Leina was in during the aftermath and she was thought to be dead.
  • In truth, rescued by Sayla Mass. The gunshot wound goes septic, and she has a lengthy recovery phase. During this time frame on occasion she connected with Judau and the Nahel Argama crew in space with her own Newtype abilities, which led them to the belief she wasn't actually dead.
  • The War ends, she reveals she's alive before Judau and Roux leave for Jupiter on a lengthy contract with the Jupiter Energy Fleet, and meets Puru-Two who promptly goes missing afterwards. Stays behind on Earth and becomes the ward of Sayla Mass, is raised by her throughout her teens in AEU Spain.
  • Discovers a love of books and the theater. Briefly does track, and joins her school's swim team. Falls out of love with anything Glemy Toto might have taught her during her time in Axis, becomes more and more disenchanted with the Federation, high society, and society's view of adulthood.
  • In Sayla's orbit, meets a lot of the Shuffle Alliance and the older generation of heroes, including Master Asia briefly before his betrayal. Fields the fallout that Axis caused within Sayla's life. Is on occasion visited by Elpeo's ghost who tries to encourage her towards finding and reuniting her 'sisters'.
  • Dates Shiro Kabuto, becomes close to him and the Mazinger Crew as a result. However, his decision to lean hard into his role as the OCU's ace pilot causes the two to become more and more distant until they decide mutually break up. The two remain close friends.
  • Judau returns!!! Roux returns!!! Puru-Two returns and now has the name Callisto Diana!!! She is understandably, thrilled.

Resources

  • Many. While she's a civilian, she's in Sayla's orbit, which means that she has access to numerous resources should she need them. Despite this, she tries not to take advantage of her and tries to use them judiciously.
  • She's aware the Shuffle Alliance exists, and knows how to directly contact them, as well as having a number of members on speed dial.
  • Is a really good shot with many small firearms. Did you really think Sayla wouldn't teach her how to shoot a gun???
  • Has stayed in touch with most characters from ZZ who remained in the Earth Sphere.

Relationships

Family
  • Judau Ashta: Her big brother, and the most important person in her life. No matter how much things change in her life, some things stay the same. That’s a great comfort to her, but it’s also a source of endless (affectionate) frustration. While she does worry about the feelings that drove him to leave for Jupiter and how much they still linger, for now they remain unaddressed because she just couldn’t be happier that he’s back in her life.
  • Sayla Mass: Leina’s Guardian who saved her life and has raised her for the past eight years. In many ways shaped the young woman that Leina’s become. She has endless affection for her, but Sayla remains a constant source of frustration. She knows she’s not truly been happy since Axis, and she’s bound and determined to help her heal, no matter what it takes. Unfortunately, that drive in many ways is also a barrier, as Sayla is just as determined to curb Leina’s self-sacrificial tendencies.
  • Elpeo Puru: Ask Leina on any given day how she remembers this girl, and it will force her to recall some of the worst days of her life. However, Judau convinced this girl to become family with them, and Leina honors that to this day. While her feelings remain mixed in many ways, after her death she started regarding her as a little sister. Her spirit sometimes still visits Leina, charging her with the responsibility of reuniting her living ‘sisters’ – a daunting task for a girl who has chosen to remain on the sidelines when it comes to fighting.
  • Callisto Diana: The two met only briefly prior to her disappearance, and during that visit Leina showed her only distance as she had not yet processed all her feelings regarding her and Elpeo. Her disappearance though instantly made her regret not immediately accepting her, as she poured so much of her time contacting old friends to try and track her down. Now that she’s returned safely, she’s trying to rectify that immediately, as she’s proud of her and the life she’s made for herself. While the two are still new to each other’s lives, Leina regards her as a little sister.
  • Nidaime: A frequent visitor to the Mass Villa. Leina knew Nidaime since back when she in physical therapy after her wounding. However back then she thought she was a poorly socialized War Orphan, not a Kaiju! She took it upon herself to try and teach her how to function around people. Now the little Kaiju considers her to be a big sister figure in her life, and Leina falls into the role of caring for her each time she pops into their home.
Family
  • Roux Louka: Leina’s always looked up to Roux despite the fact they only knew each other for a short time and considered her a role model in any ways. It’s a great relief to her that Roux remains a part of Judau’s life. However, she’s worried at the wall she felt between herself and Roux during her last visit and what it could mean for them going forward.
  • Elle Viano: Of the original Junk Dealer crew from Shangri-la, Elle and Leina got along best, after the war she’s really come into her own. Leina still looks up to her in many ways.
  • Beecha Oleg: It was a surreal moment for Leina to learn that Beecha’s became reliable in her absence. While she’s heard bits and pieces of the story of what changed him, she’s still wonders about the full story to this day.
  • Mondo Agake: Wait really? Mondo too? … No no, it must make sense, she just needs to sit down with him one day and hear the whole story.
  • Lino Abbav: Now /this/ one makes more sense to Leina. She’s glad he’s more able to speak his mind, she remembers the days when this mild-mannered kid got run roughshod over by his friends.
  • Bright Noa: While Leina has a dim opinion of the Federation on their best days, she thinks they made a solid choice appointing Bright to lead Londo Bell. Just, she wishes he would devote a little more time to his family.
  • Fa Yuiry: While she didn’t get to know her very well before she left, Fa and her connected over Leina’s conspiracy to give her brother a better life as well as Fa’s commitment to Kamille’s care. Now after the war, Leina’s tried to remain in touch with her and often calls her up to ask her for advice.
  • Lin Xiahe: “How weary, stale, flat, and unprofitable seem to me all the uses of this world.” The last time she saw her, she was the Magical Laundry Queen, and now she’s a burgeoning villainess. While Leina certainly doesn’t approve; she empathizes with the feelings that drive her. The two share an uneasy understanding, but also a love of theater.
  • The Chicken: The true nemesis of the Argama crew. Nevertheless, Leina looks back on it fondly as sort of the crew’s mascot. Much to the chagrin of everyone who lived through this menace, chickens have become one of her favorite animals over the years.
Friends
  • Shiro Kabuto: Shiro contributed in a large way to being one of the first people in Leina’s age group that made her feel welcome on Earth. The two grew up to be good friends and was Leina’s first long term relationship. Unfortunately, the two grew more distant as Shiro threw himself into his role as the ace of the OCU until they mutually decided to break up. They remain good friends, and a healthy source emotional support for each other.
  • Mamoru Amami: Like Shiro, Mamoru was someone she met when she was new to Earth. He instantly set to making her feel welcome. His boundless optimism and source of cheer was a healing experience for her throughout her early teens. The two remain casual friends, though anytime Leina needs a quick emotional upswing, she knows who to call.
  • Banagher Links: A boy who had a heavy burden forced upon him by his father. The two connected almost instantly, and Leina was charmed instantly by his sincerity and intrinsic kindness. She knows about his feelings for Mineva Lao Zabi, nevertheless, she’s decided to ask him out anyways and see where it goes between them. Even if it doesn’t work out, she’d like to remain his friend and ally.
  • Kamille Bidan: While she didn’t get to know him at all during the First Neo Zeon War, she has made every effort to correct that after the war. Once she turned eighteen, she chose him as her primary care physician. While initially they bonded over Kamille offering her advice for living as a Newtype, now the two find themselves having more and more political discussions every time she comes to his office. Sometimes she sees the angry kid he once was when he gets going...
Friendly Acquaintances
  • Koji Kabuto: While Leina never knew him during his adventurous days, and only as the scientist. She is aware of the stagnant relationship rut that Sayaka and him have fallen into from being around Shiro, the Kabuto family, and the Photon Power Labs. Perhaps unfortunately for him, Leina is a meddler when it comes to such things…
  • Sayaka Yumi: Leina respects Sayaka a lot for her position as director of the Photon Power Labs. Her work towards solving the world’s power crisis is inspirational. However, she has a feeling that there’s more that she wants to life, and that Koji is not currently giving it to her. That just means the two need someone to break them out of their status quo, right?
  • Ramo Marusa: Sayla’s ally in setting up a Yumi Foundation branch in Tsutsujidai. Leina has taken well to the mission of trying to tangibly improve this girl’s life despite recent complications that have made travel to Tsutsujidai more difficult. Her friend Akane it feels is a tougher nut to crack.
  • Anti: A new guest at the Mass villa, Leina’s taken it upon herself to try and make him feel more comfortable during his recovery. She knows that he wants to be a Knight and thinks that’s adorable. While his adjustment to life off the streets has been slow, and there have been a few problems that required some light scolding (and refilling a whole pantry) she’s so far enjoyed having another wild guest around the home.
  • Ikumi Kaidou: Mamoru’s taciturn best friend. While his reticent nature may be off-putting on the surface, Leina was never fooled by it. One does not hang around Mamoru Amami if one doesn’t enjoy his company. Got a glimpse of how warm he can be once his shell cracks, and understands completely why Mamoru and him get along so well.
  • Hana Hatsuno: Mamoru’s WIFE?! Of nearly ten years!? What??? While she may not understand that aspect of their relationship well, she nevertheless has pushed to try to get to know her better when she can. Thinks they work her far too hard and tries to nudge them towards advocating more time off for her – and themselves for that matter!
  • Guy Shishioh: She's met the King of Braves, mostly from being around Mamoru, but he's been gone from Earth for so long that she doesn't know him especially well. Maybe she'll rectify that soon, Mamoru and Ikumi indicated how hard the GaoGaiGo team is being worked after all.
  • Arriety Hearn: Callisto’s roommate and someone she considers family. She was genuinely touched by the level of support she offered to Callisto upon learning of Marida. Leina thinks the two of them have a lot in common. Eventually she intends to sit down with her for a little chat to see how that holds up.
  • Eight York: The Captain of the Ra Mari, Leina likes her, and is glad that Callisto’s found a home with her and her crew. She’s learned a few details of her life prior to Londo Bell during a tour of her ship, and has decided she wants to get closer to her and her crew.
  • Excellen Browning: Excellen is a lot, but a lot makes her an Excellen(t) distraction. She’s pretty charmed by her behavior so far, and her mere presence in Londo Bell implies a lot about how it’s run. She’s cautiously optimistic about getting to know her better, though she wants to take a harder look at her behavior before she'd take her home to meet the family, so to speak.
Acquaintances
  • Puru_Ten: Leina tried to reach out to this child on behalf of her family and understand her feelings. She took the rejection hard. However, she feels she recognizes better what happened to her, and how she came to be where she is now. That knowledge has been overwhelming to her, how in over her head is she right now? And what happens the next time the two meet?
  • Marida Cruz: Leina hasn’t actually met her, but knows she exists on the Garencieres, a Sleeves vessel. While she wants to meet her desperately, she won’t take the risk of falling into Neo-Zeon’s hands again. As such she’s accepted Sayla’s terms of a more heavily supervised first meeting. She is happy at least to hear that the ship’s captain regards her as a daughter, and all that implies.
Unfriendly Acquaintances
  • Yuliana Dispersal: While Leina is fascinated by her, and would like to learn more about her, she understands that Yuliana hates her. While she's fairly certain that she's a victim of a Cyber Newtype Lab experiment, and would like to help her, she understands you can't help someone who slaps that hand away.
It's Complicated
  • Glemy Toto: While she hated her time in Neo-Zeon as his prisoner, he treated her much better than one would expect of a prisoner of war; and she feels to this day he genuinely cared for her. While that's cold comfort given how he treated his 'creations', she genuinely felt a certain grief when he died. To this day she has a lot of unresolved trauma that was driven into her from his preparation of her for high society and the expectations of adulthood. There are some things she simply can't enjoy any longer, thanks to him.
  • Mineva Lao Zabi: Leina never even got to speak so much as two words to her. She doesn't realize to this day that she was a body double. While her feelings towards her involvement in Neo-Zeon are complicated at best, she realizes she was a victim whose life wasn't her own. In that way she can empathize, unfortunately, seeing her brings to surface memories of the worst day of her life. Knowing Banagher is fixated on her doesn't make her feel great, but her overriding desire to see the Zabi Princess live a life that's her own makes it easier to stomach.
  • ???: A Cyber-Newtype and one of her substitute tutors in Neo-Zeon who treated her kindly. She doesn't have much hope that she survived though...
  • Amuro Ray: She never met him, but she's witnessed the deep scars he's left upon the people in his life first hand. As a result she can't help but have intensely mixed feelings about him being canonized as some hero.
Dislike
  • Haman Karn: She tried to kill Judau, and shot her in the attempt. She was at the center of so much pain and suffering, and left such deep scars on her brother. While Leina feels there was more to her than that demonic pressure, it's hard for her to consider her in a kinder light to this day.
  • Char Aznable: He was willing to kill up to ten billion people to force change and she can think of no more horrible a sacrifice for change than that. More personally though, he crushed Sayla's heart and stole her happiness away from her, and she will never forgive him for that.
  • Federation Officials: She detests the status quo of the Federation, which she regards as war and violent revolution. The oppression of the poor and the Spacenoid. She's seen into the hearts of its highest officials, and learned how hollow the existence of the political elite class are, and what they'll do for a single morsel of power. Change needs to happen, and in her eyes it must be non-violent, but she understands it is going to be a Sisyphean Task. The human cost is too high to her otherwise.
  • Gottn: A jerk, plain and simple, she's glad he got a chicken to the face. Tied her to a mobile suit once just to get at her brother, she is very much not a fan of Gottn.
  • Doctor Salamedes: The overwhelming evil aura that Banagher felt has convinced her that this member of the Martian Zeonic remnants is something repulsive and awful. Their hold on Ten which she suspects comes from something terrible however pushes past her limit of tolerance. She hasn't met them and she's going to do her level best to be sure she never meets them.
