Shinji Ikari is the 'Third Child' and chosen pilot of Evangelion Unit-01, drafted into NERV by its commander, his father. At glance, Shinji's a polite and soft spoken, if distant, teenager trying to take up as little space as possible; he seems to obediently follow the instructions he's given and goes along passively with those around him. Under the surface, however, Shinji is consumed by loneliness and self-loathing. He's at odds with his desperate need for connection versus the fear that comes with opening oneself up to hurt, and, in turn, gaining the unwanted opportunity to hurt others. Yet for all of Shinji's fears, he acts with impulsive protectiveness in a crisis, willing to risk himself to safeguard another. Shinji's shaky will and sensitive heart means he may sometimes run away -- from fighting, from relationships, from himself -- but for better or worse, he keeps finding his way back.
