NERV

From Super Robot Wiki

Led by Gendo Ikari, NERV is an international anti-alien project started in the wake of Second Impact. It is the premier anti-alien Earth Sphere defense organization, and has a tendency to subsume other nascent anti-alien projects; the Gutsy Global Guard and NISAR, initially founded to address specific problems, were both ultimately brought under the NERV umbrella.

NERV is a space where mission calculus is the order of the day. No one succeeds in NERV if they aren't grimly focused on operating several steps ahead, whether against the Angels, the Dinosaur Empire, the Zondar, or any other would-be Earth-destroyers. Success, of course, is a relative term.

Despite this, NERV's public face is fairly friendly outside of its most militarized spaces; while it draws some criticism for its extensive use of Super AI (still seen as a volatile line of research), it has done an excellent job of highlighting its successes in civil defense and presenting a friendly face to the world.

Notable Characters

Gendo Ikari - NERV's leader and the primary source of its vision. Ruthless to a fault, Gendo will use anyone and make any sacrifice to defend the Earth... though his motives are not so clear to outsiders.

Shigeru Akamatsu - The son of former Gutsy Geoid Guard scientist Liger Shishioh, Shigeru Akamatsu was appointed chief of the Gutsy Global Guard after his handling of a series of Algernon-related events in the 0080s.

Charles zi Britannia - While NERV's largest and strongest base is in neutral territory contiguous with Free Japan, Charles -- in a seemingly uncharacteristically magnanimous act -- funds NERV lavishly, and not just its operations within the Britannian Union. He is privy to most NERV communications, and he and Gendo Ikari, despite their circumstances, clearly have some sort of mutual understanding.

Hayato Jin - Terrorist-turned-hero-turned-pariah Hayato Jin has been fighting the enemies of humanity for over a decade. After the dissolution of the Getter Team, he turned his effort toward making sure a world without Getter could nevertheless meet threats beyond humanity.

Key Questions

  • When the alternative to sacrifice is annihilation, how do we choose our sacrifices?
  • Is it worth it to go for long odds on something better, or accept an outcome more painful, but more likely to succeed?

Played Characters

Integration Notes

  • NERV and the Gutsy Global Guard are somewhat more beholden to their Federation backers in an obvious way than in their respective shows.
  • Gendo is read in on a whole lot more than in the show, which was already a large amount; Charles zi Britannia is, similarly, clued into many details about other shows' content. Applicants for these characters will receive the information they need to play the character effectively.
  • Hayato (and the previous Getter Team) have a slightly longer operations history than in Shin Getter Robo vs. Neo Getter Robo.
