Ruri Hoshino is an 'electronic fairy', a technopath genetically engineered to directly connect with computers. She understands the systems of the Nadesico as if they were the back of her own IFS-tattooed hand, and its Super AI, Omoikane, is her best friend and confidante. Though she's the youngest crewman on the bridge, her brusque snark belies her cute exterior -- because Ruri Hoshino had no need to understand emotions or human bonds growing up. She is brilliant, and wise beyond her years... and fundamentally lonely, separated from the foolish adults around her by a gulf of difference, even as she moves through electronic systems as if she were just another AI.

Background

Seven years ago,

Ruri, an unidentified orphan, was adopted by a couple who worked at a Nergal subsidiary computing research laboratory. Ruri was intellectually nurtured within the laboratory, and trained by her foster parents to be a Nadesico crew member, a ship slated to be completed in six years.

In return for a large compensatory award for her education, Ruri was handed over to Nergal.

What I want to know is what happened before that.

But I still want to know.

Resources

Electronic Fairy: Ruri is a type of technological empath called an 'Electronic Fairy' -- which makes her, amongst other things, a psychic hacker. She can tell how technology is feeling, though in the case of simpler electronics, whether this involves her powers 'translating' the current use state into emotional data or whether they really have interiority is an open question. She experiences sentience as curiosity, and makes connections with Super AI easily.

Because of her capacity to reach out to electronics, Ruri is able to encourage technology to do its best within the bounds of its functions. People paying close attention may notice this is the true form of her [Command] buffs. Whether she can negotiate with technology to do something contrary to their assigned tasks has yet to be seen.

The Nadesico: Ruri, integrated with Omoikane's systems, does the lion's share of systems operation on the ship -- maintaining its shields, cycling its reactors, charging its cannons. While she doesn't handle the end-user input of things like piloting the helm or communicating essential data, Ruri is able to translate to Omoikane quickly, because her mind is able to keep up with his digital reflexes. Due to this, Ruri can be considered an essential part of the Nadesico, despite not being its Captain. She's generally only seen outside of the ship when the Nadesico is in a safe place, so that Omoikane can handle systems operation automatically.

A College Education: Ruri has a rich well of knowledge of science, data, language, music, and numbers; she completed her base education when she was four years old, and while she doesn't remember the context of her lessons, she retains the knowledge. (A further six years were spent specifically on operating technological systems, but she remembers those.) Tragically, this education was deeply one-sided; while Ruri understands the theories of scientific greats like Archimedes, Einstein, and Pythagoras, she doesn't understand much about how humans feel. Including herself!

On-Ship Encyclopedia: Ruri's best friend is the Nadesico's computer, the Super AI Omoikane. Through him, she has access to an astounding amount of knowledge. She enjoys going through this encyclopedia on her down-time.

Relationships

The Nadesico

  • Omoikane: Her best friend. The only person she could really talk to, during those years in the laboratory, too. Omoikane is always here to support her, even when Ruri doesn't understand anyone else.
< RURI-RURI MODE >
  • Lucine Azul: Chose to come back to them, rather than remain on Mars. Ruri hasn't yet ascertained how much of a fool their long-range pilot is, but she's curious about the flowers.
< NADESHIKO ? >
  • Archimedes: An educational Haro gifted to Ruri by Mayvy Hawkins. Currently grounded from the bridge for the crime of annoying Erina, but she's doing great work pulling up recipes for Howmei's girls in the kitchen. Ruri doesn't remember why Archimedes felt like the correct name for her.
< SMALL FRIEND >
  • Yurika Misumaru: Foolish. But she understands more than people give her credit for, Ruri thinks.
< CAPTAIN ! >
  • Akito Tenkawa: Foolish. But it's fine if he wants to be a chef or a pilot... Ruri wonders how he figures it out.
< LET'S GO GEKIGANGER ! >
  • Jun Aoi: Foolish. But... Ruri can appreciate his dedication, anyway.
< CAPTAIN'S KEEPER ? >
  • Megumi Reinard: Foolish. A little cruel, but Ruri thinks that's okay.
< CONNECTION ESTABLISHED >
  • Minato Haruka: Foolish. Who calls someone Ruri-Ruri like that..? Well, to be honest, Ruri doesn't mind it so much.
< MANEUVERING ACKNOWLEDGED >
  • Erina Kinjo Won: Foolish. Talking loudly doesn't make people listen better. Ruri doesn't blame everyone for ignoring her.
< SET CRITIC = TRUE() >
  • Nagare Akatsuki: Foolish. Who does this hot shot think he is..? Ruri isn't sure what to think of these new people Nergal has issued them.
< ANALYSING . . . MEAN ! >
  • Mr. Prospector: Foolish. Does everything have a price to him? Ruri supposes he knows his way around a keyboard, at least.
< NERGAL IS HERE >
  • Admiral Sadaaki Munetake: Foolish. Is this really the admiral the Nadesico gets to keep?
< SUSPICIOUS >
  • Admiral Jin Fukube: Was it foolish? Ruri still isn't sure how to feel about his sacrifice.
< CHULIP . . . >
  • Seiya Uribatake: Foolish. He doesn't seem like a very reliable family man to Ruri.
< DIAGNOSTIC COMPLETE ! >
  • Ryoko Subaru: Foolish. She's way too hot-blooded... well, not like it's Ruri's problem.
< GET TO BURNING >
  • Hikaru Amano: Foolish. She's a very childish woman, Ruri thinks.
< SET STICK = SLAP() >
  • Izumi Maki: Foolish. But Ruri can appreciate her wordplay, even if it isn't really funny.
< BUILT IN PIEMONTE . . . TURIN MACHINE ? >
  • The Howmei Girls: Foolish. But they're kind to Ruri, so she supposes they're all right.
  • Ms. Howmei: Actually, she's not that foolish.
< SET EXPERIENCE = TRUE() >
  • Inez Fressange: Actually, she's not that foolish.
< KNOWING NADESICO >
  • Goat Hoary: Actually, he's not that foolish.
< RELIABLE >
  • Jiro Yamada: Foolish. But... he didn't have to die for it. Ruri feels unsettled by someone from the Nadesico killing someone else like that.
< LET'S GO . . . >

The Dreisstrager

  • The AOS: WHAT ARE YOU
< GO AWAY >
  • Mitsuba Greyvalley: Ruri is terribly frightened by her dual nature, and the way the AOS's advice flows straight to her. Regardless, she wants to help her.
< CAUTION >
  • Mayvy Hawkins: A somewhat foolish friend from Nergal's network who turned out to be... not that bad, really. She gave Ruri a Haro! But... Ruri is worried for her, now she's learned what sort of technology she's attending.
< LET'S CALL MAYVY >

Nergal

  • Zurvan Zevarist: Foolish. But Ruri enjoys his videos, and, as it turns out, his pie.
< PIE = !SPY >

The Ra Mari

  • Eight York: Maybe they're both foolish, but it's okay. Ruri's managed to apologise, so maybe everything will be okay.
< NEW FRIEND >
  • Arriety Hearn: Foolish. A civilian who stumbled into fighting... well, it's not like Ruri can't sympathise with something like that, since she's from the Nadesico. She doesn't seem like a bad person.
< HEART SPEAKER >
  • BC-001 Minae: Foolish..?! A Super AI, but human-sized. It was a big surprise, to Ruri, and she's happy that Minae seems to like her. She's impressed that she knows how to people so well, too.
< SIGNED CERTIFICATE ! >
  • Callisto Diana: Not as foolish as first presumed. (It was breakfast in a can, not pancake soda.) One of Ms. Minae's friends. She seems very worried about Ruri's welfare, like a lot of people on Ra Mari. Ruri hopes it won't end with her being sent back to the lab, because she hasn't quite internalised that there's another option.
< OK ! >

Londo Bell

  • Alma Stirner: Ruri only really has a sense of her through her Amabilis, but the impression she got was very favourable. She hopes the Amabilis has a good pilot now.
< NEW UNIT HELLO ! >

Shuffle Alliance

  • Sayla Mass: A very important person, but Ruri doesn't really care about that part. Dr. Mass helped Ruri process her feelings on Newtypes, and offered to keep an eye on something important for her; Ruri doesn't even think she's particularly foolish. Yet.
< DATA INTEGRATED >

NERV

  • Asuka Shikinami Langley: What a fool. Well, it's not that Ruri doesn't think her advice is honest, but... the rest of the world doesn't seem to agree with her. Still, could she have saved those people, if she'd been better?
< MEAN GIRL >

Unknown

  • Alexis Kerib: A foolish alien. Ruri isn't sure how to feel about him, and the people she talks to about him all seem wary, so she's cautious, too. But... she can't just dismiss him, either, since he does seem to care.
< ❌ >
  • Kaworu Nagisa: He can feel Omoikane's heart, too... Ruri's never met anyone who can do that like her, before. Even so, they're not quite the same...
< ✅ >
  • Hazard Chevalier: Foolish..? A strange, meat-eating man, but Ruri can't quite blame him for wanting to attend to his machine instead of a social function.
< RUN QUERY: SUSHI (PORK) >
  • Relena Peacecraft: Foolish. Killing one person won't bring another back. But... Ruri felt something strange, looking at her.
< HUMAN VIOLENCE ? >
  • Dr. Dorothy: Foolish. But even if she has a sharp tongue, Dr. Dorothy is a kind woman who offered Ruri some excellent advice the last time they met. She thinks well of her.
< HELPFUL >
  • Gary Biaggi: Foolish. He's one of those hot-shots who likes to flirt with women, judging from how he acted towards Mayvy. Even so, Gary is very supportive of her, and Ruri is secretly kind of happy to have a friend who knows how to operate on the battlefield.
< ACCEPTING HELP . . . OK ! >
