Rei Ayanami herself is a subdued presence bordering on the absent, rarely appearing in public outside of periodic school attendance in the Tokyo-03 school system. The designated primary pilot of Evangelion Unit-00, Rei has survived several disastrous activation tests, and has often served as a demonstration figure during inter-operatability exercises. She is frequently seen in the company of Commander Gendo Ikari. Occasional rumors -- Coordinator? Robot? Alien? -- have swirled around her enigmatic presentation, although they rarely go far. Rei occasionally demonstrates glimpses of something beneath this flat, placid outlook, but they are faint, and may be nothing at all. If she dies, she can be replaced.
