Mari Makinami Illustrious loves Evas and fighting. Having literally dropped into Tokyo-3 from the sky coincidentally at the same time as Evangelion Unit-04's arrival, Mari claims to be a transfer from Euro-NERV and, indeed, all the paperwork checks out. Mari is bright and friendly and has a haphazard grasp on the nature of personal space, but her little eccentricities - including a love of ancient music from the dark ages prior to the Universal Century and her tendency to smell people for ill-defined reasons - all seem largely harmless. Though she has no official Child designation on record and nobody is quite sure someone with such a sunny disposition is really qualified for the grim and traumatic burden of Evangelion piloting, Mari seems to be handling it just fine, insisting she 'lives for this!'. Maybe some people just thrive on being the square peg in the round hole.
