Born and raised in Free Japan, Haruki as a child had a relatively normal life considering the state of the world. This all changed when the father he idolized died in a kaiju attack, sacrificing himself to rescue as many straggling survivors as possible. Inspired by his actions, and also determined to never let something like this happen again to others, Haruki aspired to be someone that could help, and as an adult enlisted into NERV where he was later assigned to STORAGE to pilot then recently developed SAA-1 Sevenger. Kind and somewhat goofy, Haruki faces life with a somewhat aimless desire to do the right thing and a large amount of optimism. Accompanying him with his struggles is the definitely not mysterious, totally awesome, and not at all geeky Ultraman Z (pronounced Zett), an alien giant from the Land of Light he has recently physically bonded with due to a shared unfortunate accident.
