Ranka Lee is a teenage girl living under the shadow of her own past trauma on the Frontier Colony Fleet. A victim of mysterious circumstances suffering from PTSD and dissociative amnesia, she was taken in by SMS Ace Ozma Lee after the tragedy of the 117th Research fleet and raised by him, the song in her heart the only thing deeply engrained enough to survive the loss of her memories. Heavily sheltered by her ‘Big Brother’ from his guilt over the incident, the shy and insecure Ranka Lee has only recently found the confidence to spread her wings and leave the nest thanks to the encouragement of both Alto Saotome and Sheryl Nome. A runner up in the Miss Macross Pageant, Ranka has signed on with Vector Productions to begin her career as a budding idol. That assumes a lot however, as first, she’ll have to survive the invasion of the Vajra, an alien race whose orbit she’s been drawn into for longer than she’s even aware of.

Background

Ranka Lee's first memory is waking up in a medical bay, poked, and prodded and evaluated by medical professionals and psychiatrists before being taken home by Ozma Lee, an Ace Pilot of the SMS. At the time she was near-catatonic and mute, unable to truly function until Ozma baked her a Pine Cake taught to him his then girlfriend Cathy Glass. Ranka began to cry, declaring it was 'horrible' and labelling him her big brother.

For the next twelve years the two had lived a relatively stable home life. Ranka was easily triggered by any kind of violence, which caused her to make him promise he'd quit his active combat duty at the SMS and switch to a desk job. Ozma in turn was smothering and overprotective but perhaps in a way that Ranka needed during a time in her life when she was extremely fragile.

Ranka has never sought out what came before, subconsciously there was always something that told her that nothing good came from that forgotten period of her life. Yet there is a song in her heart that she knows must have, a tune called 'Aimo' which she had never shared and always sang to herself because she was always terrified of the idea of what might happen if others heard it without knowing why.

Music became an important part of her life, blossoming into adolescence listening to Lynn Minnmay, Sharon Apple, Fire Bomber, and most of all Sheryl Nome. The Galactic Fairy has been her favorite songstress ever since her debut, and Ranka idolized her as everything she ever wanted to be but didn't have the courage to become.

Instead she mostly kept to herself as she attended St. Maria's School for Girls on the colony, working her shifts at the NyanNyan for a little extra household income, and every so often going to the park to sing to herself, the false sky, and the trees.

And then everything in her life began to change for her the day that she received a ticket to Sheryl's concert...

Relationships

Older Brother(s)

Ozma Lee - Her Big Brother has been there for her as long as she can remember, and however much she loves him; his overprotectiveness is smothering. While she's forgiven him for lying to her, she hasn't forgotten it.

Brera Sterne - Ranka has no explanation for how she feels when she's around Brera. She finds herself drawn to him, and she feels safe in his care. Somehow he knows Aimo, which he plays adeptly with a harmonica and even if he can't, or won't tell her how he does, she refuses to press him. What's more important is her desperation that he remain a part of her life. She's infinitely grateful for how he's saved her life now, twice! Even if she can't remember one of those times.

Inner Circle

Alto Saotome - Her crush, who inspired her to take the first steps towards her dreams While Alto is abrasive and often 'mean' to her, she understands its his way of showing affection, and his way of defending himself against a world that's hostile to his identity. She knows many people are disappointed in him for leaving his family tradition, pretending to know better than he does about who he ought to be; but Ranka likes who he is /now/ and wants to encourage him towards living the life he wants flying the blue skies. She hasn't yet had the courage to tell him how she feels, though perhaps one day...

Sheryl Nome - Her second crush, or perhaps first if you count the date she first listened to Pink Monsoon. Sheryl is both inspirational and aspirational, and she considers becoming her equal as an idol as both a friend and rival the true measuring stick to her dream. Despite being her biggest fan first, she's enjoying becoming more and more her friend even if she hopes for more than friends as well. As she comes closer to the true Sheryl Nome, she feels for the loneliness she felt growing up, the sense of isolation that comes with fame. Even if her feelings aren't reciprocated in the end, she knows she wants to continue to be there for her.

Emilia Eschonbach - Her friend is a Princess of Zeon!? Ranka is still processing this knowledge because gosh, but her being reunited with her cousin has done such wonders for her that Ranka can't help but see it as a positive. Emilia is a girl whose feelings are something Ranka has always been drawn to, sensing she's on her own personal journey of emotional growth away from the cruel circumstances of her birth and life under the thumb of a horrid man. The two have become friends that at times don't even need words to express their feelings. Recently she revealed herself as one of the Black Knights to save her from an awful situation, unfortunately the standoff that resulted caused her to lose nearly all memory of what happened. Perhaps it's for the best? So long as Britannia doesn't come knocking to ask some uncomfortable questions.

Kaworu Nagisa - Kaworu and Ranka met originally near Tokyo-3, as he heard her singing for the first time, and bonded over the small creature that crossed their path, Ai-kun. Since then she's come to be in awe of Kaworu's skills as a musician, whereas Kaworu has been unfailingly supportive of her dream to make music. As such he's become her secret songwriter and arranger of sorts for her few songs. The two recently became closer when they found out about each other's crushes, and have come to support each other's feelings in romance as well.

Ai-kun - Ai-kun is cute uncomplicated pet that probably breaks all kinds of ecological laws, but Ranka cares more about not leaving him all alone in the world than breaking some cruel law. If he gets loose though - watch out! Surely there's nothing else going on with Ai-kun, don't worry about it.

Friends

Milly Ashford - Scandalous and scheming, Milly Ashford is someone that Ranka had no idea what to make of at first, until she realized that so much of what Milly puts on is a front and that most of her schemes are benevolent in propping up her friends. The two recently came to an alliance of sorts to help prolong Emilia's length of stay at Ashford, and away from her Grandfather. She's grateful to Milly and intends to pay her back as much as she can after she debuts...

Kallen Stadtfelt - A member of the sleepover club, Ranka finds she likes Kallen a lot, even if she feels like Kallen keeps a lot of people at arm's length. At times she gets hints of her competence that belies her sickly persona, and she looks at it in wonder. Still, she has no idea that Kallen is the Ace pilot of the Black Knights, a fact that most of them are likely grateful for.

Ruri Hoshino - The taciturn Systems Operator of the Nadesico, Ruri and her bonded over their mutual love of music. As such the two have gone to several concerts with each other, and have encouraged each other when it comes to singing. Ranka finds herself currently apprehensive over Ruri's relationship with Alexis Kerib, however she's scared of how it might harm things to outright forbid her from speaking to him, as such she's encouraged her to do so, but to simply come and talk to all of them afterwards so they can talk about it. Even so she's apprehensive, what intentions does this alien have for her?

Lucine Azul - A pilot for the Nadesico, Ranka was drawn to her gentle heart and love for flowers; as well as her intriguing worldview born from her life on Mars. Recently however, things became more complicated when Kaworu at first was the target of an assassin, and later when Lucine decided to reveal to Ranka that she's a Newtype. It certainly sounds true, but is that the whole story? Whenever Ranka's on the Nadesico, she spares some time each day to sing Aimo for her garden.

Rin Starking - A student at Ashford Academy, Ranka has found herself marvelling at Rin's technical expertise, while Rin has become a fan of her music. Recently Rin helped spare her from some truly terrible circumstances on a train, as Ranka was subject to Britannian racism again. Afterwards, she learned more of her family circumstances, and understands much better why Rin has such problems with Britannia.

Nunnally Lamperouge - Another member of the sleepover club, Ranka always enjoys her company, she's just so pleasant and fun to be around. Unfortunately a handshake led to a moment where she realized that Nunnally has her own damage at the hands of Britannian society. The two haven't managed to speak about that yet, it's understandably awkward.

Friendly Acquaintances

Grace O'Connor - Sheryl's hypercompetent manager, Ranka's learned first hand just how reliable she is after she managed to cover for Emilia and her friends sneaking into space to see a Sheryl concert. While she's been inclined to do things on her own, Grace's insistence that she can count on her lulls her more and more into letting Grace do just that. Certainly it has nothing to do with the scent of perfume on Grace, that brings this nostalgic sense about her of a mother's love. Surely not.

Rena Lancaster - A pilot for the Ra Mari, and a Variable Fighter Pilot just like Alto! She likes her enthusiasm and can sympathize grateful with her fangirling causing her to shout something really really embarrassing.

Liam 7-020 - A big man with a gentle heart, Ranka likes him but realizes he's definitely going through something she doesn't quite understand, and suffering from it. She ships him quite ardently with Lucine!

Elisa Kafim - A half-Meltrandi Doctor and Olympic Gymnast?! Gosh, high achiever! Elisa is a fan of her vocal talents whom she likes in their few meetings and certainly not a summoner of Void Dragons and awful space Kaiju.

Shinji Ikari - A gentle and unconfident young man, Ranka sympathizes a lot with him. He just also happens to be Kaworu's crush, which Ranka is keeping an absolute secret. Part of her desperately wants the two to be together, and part of her knows she shouldn't meddle and ought to respect his wishes. Still there's nothing wrong about inviting Kaworu and him to her events is there?

Do Not Like

Yuliana Kafim - She's married!? Ranka's not certain what to do with this knowledge that she's married to Doctor Elisa Kafim, someone whom she likes? What's going on between the two of them? This REA Ace Pilot bullied her for existing then left her so mixed up over the idea that noone would ever believe her, it sucks!!!

Joseph Eschonbach - Ranka hates this man and wants him out of Emilia's life as soon as possible after all the abuse she's suffered in his care. While she'd never wish death on anyone, Joseph nearly gets her there, nearly.
