Naoko - or Nova Stellar as she commonly goes by - is a self-proclaimed Miracle Worker, gifted in the fields of mechanical engineering, programming and AI, though lacking in terms of an actual education and, frankly, common sense. Left without a home to return to following dubious circumstances, and having found herself caught in the middle of a battle that led to a split in the Federation, she ended up finding a new home in the newly formed Three Ships Alliance. Though she tends to be wildly unpredictable in terms of the practicality of her engineering work, she is an oddly capable pilot for someone with no official training, making use of a unique model Arm Slave that she claims to be of her own design. Though still getting used to a world at war and coming to terms with mental abilities that she doesn't fully understand, she does her best to stay optimistic, compensating for emotional insecurity through a loud and boisterous personality. Aiding her in this are a pair of mysterious AIs who communicate on a psychic level, assisting both her piloting and her general well-being.
Background
Born in Akaigawa, a sleepy village of around 1000 inhabitants in Japan's Hokkaido province. Her parents, Mao and Itachi Suzuki, a pair of mechanical engineers, were not often around as they put their career before their child, thus raising her with a focus on self-responsibility and self-sufficiency. Though not entirely free of hardship, her life was relatively stable and mundane, according to her: she rarely set foot outside her hometown and war never came to her doorstep, so in her estimation she had it fairly easy compared to most.
During her childhood, she had trouble connecting with people due to being intellectually far ahead of her peers while being emotionally and socially stunted. That all changed when two AI-entities 'awakened' within the butterfly hairclips she's worn most of her life. Though she doesn't appear to know the reason for their appearance, the entities, by the names of Uriel and Ariel, communicated with her on a psychic level, and started giving her advice on what to say and do in her daily interactions, thus helping her out of her shell. They became her most treasured friends, and Naoko hasn't gone anywhere without them ever since.
When her parents realized the extent of her talent in their field, she was granted access to the secret hangar beneath their house, where she worked on the construction of an Arm Slave. Until one day in January of 0097, she received a frantic phone call from her mother, telling her to get the machine out of there because 'people were coming'. The next thing Naoko knew, she found herself in the cockpit of her own NS-1 Sukeban, running away from everything she'd ever known. Not long after, a fateful encounter with the battleship Ra Mari would end up changing her life forever....
Resources
Naoko is a Whispered, with all the advantages and disadvantages that entails. She doesn't really understand her ESP and telepathic ability, but on the psychic level, there doesn't tend to be much that escapes her notice, whether she likes it or not.
Very much a Math And Science Brain with an analytical mind, she has an unnatural talent for (re-)constructing machines, as well as advanced programming skills. All she needs is to be given access to the proper tools and the right materials, and there's no telling what she might do! In a good or bad sense.
But of course, her most notable assets would be...
Uriel and Ariel
Though it's still unclear exactly what these two entities inhabiting Naoko's butterfly hairclips are, the known facts are:
- They are some form of AI;
- They have no voice box, and can only communicate on a psychic level;
- They can fly around much like actual butterflies;
- Their capabilities other than that, as well as their knowledge, appear to be limited;
- Their main concern appears to be Naoko's well-being.
Uriel (the black one) has a boyish 'voice' and tends to be straightforward to the point of rudeness. His proposed solutions to problems tend to be simple and direct, spurring Naoko to action when she's indecisive. Ariel (the white one) has a feminine 'voice' and is much more level-headed and polite by comparison, with a more cautious nature that balances out her counterpart. She tends to reel Naoko in when her actions are causing more problems than they solve. Predictably, the two end up arguing a lot, but in the end can always find common ground in their shared goal.
As they speak on a psychic level, most people can't hear them. What about your character? Though there's always exceptions, generally speaking characters with 0 or 1 Awakening won't hear a thing, while characters with 3+ Awakening will hear them clearly. Characters with 2 Awakening are free to decide!
NS-1 Sukeban
A unique model third-generation Arm Slave of Naoko's own creation (for the most part). It stands at an even 8m, is colored entirely in shades of violet, and is of the usual humanoid design, with a number of oddities. Its hands are a bit too large to match its frame, additional reactive armor plating has been applied haphazardly to give it an intentional patchwork look, it has a frankly ridiculous amount of thrusters all over the legs and even some on the arms, and it has an oversized pair of round discs serving as shoulder plates. There are attachments for a large two-handed weapon on its back, usually holding a massive metal spiked club. An attempt was made to give the head a girlish appearance by means of mechanical pigtails, with dubious success. Ultimately, there wasn't much of a design philosophy here: Naoko basically just did what she thought was cool.
Despite this, the Sukeban's performance level is equal to or even manages to exceed the average third-generation model. Its many thrusters allow for blindingly fast reaction times, and its advanced sensor package and custom OS can aid in quick analysis of the overall battlefield situation or individual machines. Its most commonly used weapons are its fists, capable of conducting an amount of heat large enough to effectively function as hand-shaped heat sabers. Other weapons include the electricity-conducting club it carries (which also shoots a giant beam for some reason), and its twin shoulder discs, which are actually remote weapons armed with rapid-fire beam guns and their own superheated edges, allowing them to act much like buzzsaws. Its built-in chest vulcans stand in contrast to all this by being completely unremarkable.
Yet the most notable thing about the machine cannot fully be discerned without taking it apart: its piloting interface. Looking inside the cockpit, it would be difficult to see how one is even supposed to pilot it at all, given that the usual Arm Slave controls, while present, are disconnected and partially disassembled. The loose cables hanging from the canopy are an obvious hint that there's something they need to plug into... without that something, there's no way to make the machine move. Naoko obviously knows the secret to piloting it, but as it stands, she is the only who can.
