After the various catastrophes, humanity needed time to recover. At the same time they needed people to work the main transit stations between cities and the colonies in order to make sure that said recovery did not stagnate. They created the Iron Zanrailer for maintaining the various transit rails as an experiment. With barely a minimum needed crew and a sophisticated if supposedly locked down AI, it seemed perfect for the job. It was a surprise whenever a passing kaiju attempting to eat the Orbital Ring's rail system caused the core unit to gain sentience and protect the crew. Since then, Zan has shown himself something of a progressive builder and scientist. The strangest part is that he has absolutely refused to have a more combat made body available despite everything else facing the world. As a Super AI, he acknowledges the mistrust and the microscope on him as one of the few active and under the trust of NERV to keep him in line. He also happens to have a healthy dose of seeing the worth of other sentient beings and tries his best to protect them with everything he has and is able to do.
Background
- Created in 0095 in response to needed maintenance on the railways such as those keeping the orbital ring stable at times.
- First "aware" action was battling a kaiju attacking the orbital ring's railways on it's way to Earth. Battle gained attention from the Federation and resulted in his being assigned to NERV.

- Materials supplied from Senpuuji Connection and Linear Train Industries in order to maintain railways.
- Able to remotely access systems in order to communicate.
- Construction Programming Design - Zan is an avid builder and craftsman in his spare time. He tends to help this by designing new structures and even helps maintain allied units.

- Linear Train Industries - A bit of a rocky connection due to their rivalry with Senpuuji Connection. Zan still treats them with respect and rarely disobeys orders from them.

- Evangelion Pilots - So far he regards the Evangelion pilots as allies and possible friends. He has only met three, but they left a good impression on him.
