(This is not a general summary of PLANT and ZAFT.)

ZAFT (Zodiac Alliance of Freedom Treaty) comprises the militia forces of the PLANTs. Unlike the regular militaries of the Federation nations, ZAFT is a militia with only a modest formal rank structure. More than 99% of members of ZAFT are Coordinators, in part because it would take a truly elite non-Coordinator pilot to be comfortable with the expectations of Coordinator-tuned mobile weaponry.

At present, ZAFT's primary goal is to strike back at the Earth Federation after the destruction of its Junius Seven colony with a nuclear device. ZAFT does not differentiate between individual Federation member blocs particularly much. It especially has no love for the cross-bloc agencies, such as Londo Bell and G-Hound.

ZAFT members can be roughly distinguished by rank or expertise using uniform color. The majority of ZAFT pilots wear a green uniform, while aces wear red, officers wear black or tan, and those higher in the chain of command than a typical ship captain wear white or purple. Aces are also permitted to customize their pilot suits.

Notable Characters

  • Haruki Kusakabe - One of ZAFT's most powerful supporters, Haruki Kusakabe represents the interests of the Jovian Federation in the Earth Sphere. While he shares common cause with ZAFT (and Jovian PCs are generally given the ZAFT faction), he has his own agenda.
  • Patrick Zala - The current Chairman of the PLANT Supreme Council. Patrick Zala lost his wife in the Junius Seven attack, and is bitterly vengeful. He purposefully conceals information from the more moderate factions to keep the war going and avoid muddying the waters.
  • Rau le Creuset - A mysterious man in a mask and one of ZAFT's top officers. Rau has a gentle, encouraging demeanor, but those with strong intuition tend to notice quickly that even at his most reserved, the air around him feels almost distorted with malice.
  • Siegel Clyne - The former Chairman of the PLANT Supreme Council. Siegel Clyne lost his position amid the push to war. He worries about the future of the PLANTs.
  • Zayeed Winner - Zayeed Winner, a wealthy industrialist, is a member of Siegel Clyne's faction within PLANT. Mr. Winner's family has proven emblematic of the Coordinator fertility crisis.
