Angel
An Angel is a mysterious classification of lifeform commonly believed to be a subtype of kaiju. Angel appearances are sporadic and are almost singularly focused on attacking Tokyo-3; it is unclear why this is.
Angel physiology is unique in several ways: no two Angels are alike, and all possess powers that seem to defy conventional logic. The corpus of the Angel is not its true body, but rather a red, spherical organ referred to as a Core. An Angel cannot truly be killed until the Core is breached, at which point it undergoes a dramatic and violent process of discorporation known as Image Collapse; most Angel Cores are protected, sometimes in unconventional ways.

The first known Angel manifestation was the Fourth Angel, Sachiel. While this implies the existence of a First, Second and Third, their identities are unknown (publicly anyway).

- The Third Angel was secretly being sealed inside NERV's Bethany Base facility built specifically to contain and study it and as such was never given a designation; its existence, escape and execution at the hands of Mari Makinami Illustrious are all heavily classified by NERV.
