A privileged girl of mercurial temperament, Miorine Rembran has few noteworthy accomplishments other than being born as the daughter of Delling Rembran. She should want for nothing, but weighing her late mother's memory against the emotional distance of her 'lousy father' caused her to grow more resentful of him. She chose the solace of her greenhouse over following in his footsteps.
Thanks to her father, Miorine's hand in marriage marriage is now a prize, with her fate in the hands of the Holder, Asticassia's dominant Duelist -- and so, rattling the bars of her gilded cage is no longer enough for Miorine. Instead, she has begun to initiate several ill-fated escape attempts in pursuit of escaping to Earth to chase the memory of her mother and seize back control of her life. At least, that was the plan until a certain idiot stumbled into her life, winning her in a duel against the previous Holder, Guel Jeturk.
Now engaged to a clueless and hapless Holder, she's decided to make the best of it by using Suletta Mercury as a distraction to give her time to plan her next escape. However, as it becomes clear that Suletta is truly different from the ambitious heirs and heiresses at the school of might makes right, Miorine must reexamine her goals and realize how much she has to learn about herself and what she wants from life.
