Heteroic Angel Noa Abe was a manga published in Girls Golden Weekly for six years, following the adventures of the titular character in her quest to find love for all her classmates. What started out as a light hearted comedy turned into a more thoughtful, serious reflection on what it was to be Jovian society's 'greatest treasure' as well as the difficulties Jovian women face in love and comparing to the Kokubunjian Ideal.

While early chapters poked fun at the idea that anyone could see this Emblem of Womanhood as a man, the series hit it's real audience among lovesick young women who felt uncertain their romantic future.

The series gained renown amongst men and women both with the storyline 'Your Boyfriend Is A Pilot', where Noa and Sumire help their classmate Hifumi identify her perfect man, a stout supporter of his fellow man named Akio. What starts as an ideal love match ends tragically, when Akio dies defending Hifumi from anti-Admiralty terrorists. The scene in the final chapter, 'Your Boyfriend Was A Hero', where Noa pretends to be Akio one final time for Hifumi to say goodbye was nominated for several awards, and to this day is considered a masterpiece of shojo fiction, and is said to serve as a reminder to pilots of what they leave behind when they sacrifice.

A running theme in the series was that while Noa could identify anyone else's perfect man, she could not do so for herself or her best friend- it was Noa's theory that once she had matchmade for all her classmates, she'd meet her own Mr Right.

Unfortunately, the series ended just before it's final planned arc, where Noa and Sumire would finally meet their perfect husbands, as the author, Eisuke Kurokawa, tragically gave his life for the Jovian cause as part of an expeditionary deployment.

To this day, the Bureau of Matchmaking and Marriages still use images of Noa and Sumire in their advertising and have matchmakers dress as the two at public events. Categhory:Culture
