Gundam Fight
The Gundam Fight is a martial contest that has taken place once every four years since 0080. During the Gundam Fight, each Federation member nation sends one designated Gundam unit to Earth, and they fight, and fight, and continue fighting, until only one is left standing. If a winner is not determined in the first eleven months, the participants are brought to a central location and run through a tournament arrangement until a winner is determined.
The winning nation is allowed to appoint an individual (usually their chief executive, but not always) to the position of Ruler of All Known Space, which serves as a legislative tiebreaker in the Federation Assembly and appoints many judicial and administrative positions.
Gundam Fight Rules
From 0080 to 0088, the rules of the Gundam Fight were as follows:
- A unit whose head section has been destroyed is disqualified.
- A Gundam Fighter must never aim at the cockpit of an opponent's Gundam. Supplement: Accidental harm inflicted on a Gundam Fighter during a match is acceptable.
- A Gundam Fighter may repair any damage to their Gundam as often as they desire and move on to the championship league, as long as the head section has not been destroyed.
- A Gundam Fighter must take full responsibility for protecting their own Gundam.
- A match shall only be held on a one-on-one basis.
- A Gundam Fighter shall not taint the honor and dignity of the nation they are representing.
- The Earth is the ring. Supplement: Destruction of property on Earth due to the Gundam Fight is not considered a crime.
The amended Gundam Fight rules put in place in 0092 make the following changes:
- Unlimited repairs, improvements, and substitutions are acceptable during the final tournament.
- Victory may be obtained through any means (including targeting the cockpit). This overrides the prohibition in rule 2.
