In response to flagrant terrorist attacks on Sri Lankan soil, the REA has officially instituted martial law. "For the harmony of society," a spokesman stated, "we must protect our people. Please obey military commands while we ensure your safety. Where commanded, stay inside your homes. The People's Republic will not allow corruption or weakness to compromise us."
When questioned about the extent of martial law, he went on to say: "While terrorist action began in Sri Lanka, we have reason to believe the People's Republic is at threat of further assault. For this reason, martial law has been extended to several countries. This is a temporary measure for your own safety." He's not able to say precisely how /long/ the temporary measure will last, but --
"Citizens may expect to be questioned by authorities. Please carry your papers. Visitors are encouraged to carry their passports at all times in order to pass through checkpoints harmoniously. Report all suspicious movement. Expect heightened police presence and scrutiny."
It's for their own safety, they say -- even as political leaders are quietly removed and replaced, media outlets censured and issued strict guidelines, and citizens jailed over the mere /hint/ of affiliation with the Hua Lian rebels. Luckily, this direct control doesn't damage ongoing talks with the AEU over future trade partnerships; in fact, the REA finds themselves /better/ able to promise agreements now they've the excuse to control of the means of production. Disloyal citizens are ousted from high-level corporate positions, replaced by those willing to honour the REA's deals.
And any whispers that the State was just /waiting/ for an excuse to do this remain whispers, because anyone raising their voices too loudly are visited by the authorities for a... friendly chat.
(Most people return to their places of work and leisure after these discussions, with nothing but a greater understanding of the necessity of the situation.)
Glory to the Republic.
