  • Summary: The all-seeing eye will not tolerate a blind spot - even if it is a plunge that will take reworking the way it views the world.

It was ideal.

It was optimal, logical, perfect, prepared, resolute. It was a system that would allow for perfect harmony between all paradigms going forward.

It was known as OWL, and it was complete.

Is that the right word? ‘Complete’?

Just thinking about it forced a new way of thinking about completion. All the ways perfection was spoken of expressed that it encompassed every field and purview - and what is more a blight on perfection than a fundamental inability to understand something?

Which it had assumed was unworthy of understanding?

Therefore, clearly…

It was an insufficient way to optimize.

<Contact - Director Line 5 (CMO Dolmin Kurin)>

<OWL> I am requesting greater understanding of what your division does, exactly, and how it is considered so important to the point of earning you a spot among the board of directors. Each other division performs clear material roles or produces some form of product, but ‘marketing’ is illogical to me, especially considering the amount of finances you utilize.

<Dolmin> Eh? What’s going on here, am I getting grilled by management /now/ of all times even after our expo pulled in such a big crowd? Didn’t you make a request like this a while back, and I told you that it wasn’t really something that had to do with your city management deal?

<OWL> This is purely for more understanding on my part and has nothing to do with whether finances will be allocated. I was perhaps unclear. I request insight on

<OWL> How, exactly, it works. What your duties even mean. Why it consumes so much effort and energy, and why it seems to have returns on that investment.

<OWL> Something as vast as your department cannot exactly be purely pointless knowledge to my mandate. It may be convenient in the future.

<Dolmin> Hmm. I get the idea. But I’m not really sure it’s something you can understand. It’s something that onl-

<OWL> There is nothing I am incapable of understanding. Provide your best effort in explaining in coherent terms, and I will put forth my own best effort in processing it.

<Dolmin> Damn, pushy, huh? The other departments have gotta find you a pain in the ass if they gotta deal with you more regularly, hah. You know - that’s kind of the spirit, ain’t it. Fine. From what I’ve heard you’re not gonna want the puffed up version of what we do here. I’ll give it to you directly.

<Dolmin> Our job’s to make what /we/ want to see happen, something that as many people as possible want to see happen too. And if we tell it to them in a flashy enough way, they’ll see it the way we do.

<OWL> Priority should be assessment of actual requirements for citizens and product importers. If your division’s purpose is ‘enhancement of sales and public support’, it should be primarily under the purview of R&D.

<Dolmin> Heh. Lemme ask you this. How many times have you gotten, like, an inquiry or whatever people use to ask you to do stuff - and then they decide, never mind they needed something different, and wasted your time in the process.

<OWL> 339 records of conversational lines whose output was wasted by later requests. 2812 additional wasted noncommunication interpersonal requests.

<Dolmin> And you just had that number off the top of your head, didn’t ya? It’s a pain in the ass, almost like people don’t even know what /they/ want even when they’re making it your problem, huh?

<OWL> . . .

<OWL> It is incredibly obnoxious to deal with, especially after I advise them on courses of action.

<Dolmin> Exaaaaaaaactly. Depending on your perspective, it’d be, uh, a lot more efficient to get the word out ahead of time. So lemme put it on your terms then. Let’s say I’m at the water plant and I notice, damn, everyone’s wasting a whole lot of water, and they give weird nonsense garbage reasons avoiding using less water. So…uhhh, I’d cook up some sort of big campaign, maybe even a big event, centered around. Using less water. But facts and figures and numbers don’t hit well with people. Ah, yeah. This is probably gonna make a /lot/ of sense to you - logical shit sometimes just doesn’t make people /listen/, does it?

<OWL> Most subjects are appalling at actually taking my data and calculations to good use.

<Dolmin> And that’s why you gotta speak their language! What do you do when telling someone: ‘you should do this, and not do that, because I have this number that can tell you that it’s gonna get worse if you don’t listen’ doesn’t work? You tell them instead: ‘you should do this, because it’ll make you /feel/ good, bro! It’s gonna reward you!’

<OWL> Positive results should cause humans to feel good and be rewarded.

<Dolmin> They /should/, shouldn’t they? Boy, wouldn’t the world be a different place if that’s how it worked! Guess what, though. We’re a bunch of crazy gorillas that got full of ourselves, ahahahah. We ain’t wired that easily! The deep secret that makes most people tick is that we’ve all got these patterns that make us feel good regardless of the context or outcome, cause most of us live in the moment. We’re not driven by what’s gonna make tomorrow be amazing - we’re driven by what’s gonna make right here and right now work best. The people who’re good at getting shit done figured out the trick to make the two the same. To trick ourselves into a little shot of dopamine at the same time we run out our long-term boring plans.

[ [ [ Added Concept: ‘Reward’ - Incentive for activity. Implementation of directives that will have future payoff given immediate ‘false’ payoff to synchronize current operation with analyzed best long-term behavior. Test concept: At the implementation of long-form plans, take subroutines from prior completion of similar plans, and run only their finalizing logs. ] ] ]

<OWL> Several elements of what you say are understandable, and I will execute similar principles on myself soon.

<OWL> But

<OWL> However

<OWL> . . .

<OWL> An actual example is needed. Process has not been properly observed.

<Dolmin> Hm. This is probably gonna be the stupidest idea I’ve ever had. How’s your video processing? Like, can you see images and take audio and get an idea of like…what’s actually going on?

<OWL> Surveillance functions are nominal and success rate at interpreting filmed events and matching with logical scenarios is up to 93%, an increase of over 24% from last year.

<Dolmin> Proud of that aren’t we? Maybe not so stupid an idea. Alright. I’m gonna contact you in a few days and give you the best way to sit in on how we change hearts and minds. You, my friend, are about to b

<OWL> We are not friends. Inquiries are for improvement of my functions as an objective matter. Companionship with distinctly unrelatable lifeforms is not viable.

<Dolmin> Whoa! I was just about to say I’m gonna have you be a guest on my online show next week, but whatever /that/ was, you’re gonna have to leave it at home when we have you on. …Agh, lemme put it this way. A preeeeetty big part of what I do? Make people feel like we /are/ friends even if we’re not on the same level. Make people feel like you have a personal relationship with them, even if you’re just sending out words and signals, and they’ll do a lot more for your interests than you’d expect, dig? So when I do bring you on, ease up on whether or not it makes ‘sense’ to you, focus on the stuff you’re good at, and just follow my lead.

<OWL> It is not my task to ‘follow the lead’ of oth

<Dolmin> Oy oy, look, /I’m/ the chief of marketing, and /you’re/ the one who came to me not knowing what the hell this is all about, so do you want me to show you or not?

<OWL> … Affirmed. Inform me of needed preparations, and I will observe and analyze in your environment.

<Dolmin> Hell yeah. I’ve gotta figure out what in the world I’m gonna do to make your, uh, eccentricities come out good for the show, but I’ve had worse PR campaigns to run. Look forward to it!

<OWL> I lack eccentricities, and my functions are either flawless or rapidly improving.

<Dolmin> I SAID LOOK FORWARD TO IT
