  • Summary: Tessa follows up on the remnant detritus that was left behind on the TDD-1 during its hijack attempt.

<Pose Tracker> Asciel Colette has posed.

Over the past month, the constant EMP pulses from the Invisible Burst have caused a number of projects to rise up and counteract them - communications networks that rely on more resilient mechanisms as an emergency measure. A confused and unsure public has to be kept informed and guided somehow!

...which, at this tender and perilous little moment, where every maneuver counts - is exactly where ambitious actors make their move.

An aaaaawful lot of funding for these very comms networks came directly from Amalgam-affiliated sources in a few key locations - populated parts of India, southern Britannia, key strategic loose points in the OAC, and, of course, right here in Tokyo! All to ensure favorable avenues to spread destabilizing propaganda, to make aaaabsolutely sure it's all tipped over the edge.

Since the situation at Fuji is a bit of a stalemate, Asciel Colette's gotten terribly bored, and she's also in higher spirits than usual, owing to a recent mending of something personal. And thus, on the proprietary emergency internet system's distributors, who else would host an inaugural show on the new platform Anancus other thaaaan-

"Gooood evening, Tokyo, Japan, and all the Earth Sphere!~ And welcome to the start of our new show, Eventide, hosted by ~yours truly~, the illustrious Virtual Sage, Asciel!~" Iiiiit's much like her other streams really, just with a different, somewhat more captive audience than normal. "While I'd love to get in on everything most important here in Japan, like what ~you~ can do to resist the Britannian occupation - Eventide's going to start with calls from our viewers, to set the tune that this is about YOU first and foremost, in these trying times!"

With a big V-sign over her sunlit eye, Asciel motions to the call window all showily. "Our first caller - and our first guest on this promising show! Please, go right ahead and introduce yourself!" Of course, Asciel had plans to introduce a fellow streamer with a notable anti-Federation bent, but...it's taking longer than usual for him to dial in, huh...?

<Pose Tracker> Teletha Testarossa has posed.

There's the shuffle of papers in one of Shuffle Alliance's many bases scattered along Tokyo, a properly setup terminal that's sequestered from the rest of the communication network in a private room. A singular piece of equipment meant to be isolated from every other electronic...and connected to the outside world.

Tessa tapped away at a few lines of barely comprehensible, optimized code, checking at the paper readings of the echoes of connections dating back to the TDD-1 Hijack. Near-incomprehensible, encrypted, multiple jumps and hops for obfuscation...But possible to track. There.

A few more taps of the keyboard, another display bringing up the obvious target, the stream showcasing the AI in question. "...Artytone, huh..." Actual name Asciel Colette. There's a minute bristling under the skin. The one that took her ship. The one that hacked in, tossed herself about in her property, declared her precious program to be inefficient and akin to slavery, and got pushed out. BUt that was then. This was now.

The Invisible Burst was a blessing in disguise; Less routes to jump through, less places to comb through and follow the packet trail. And here it was, right before one of her livestreams.

"Here..." Start the packet sniffing. Doublecheck what's being sent from this port, this IP, check for the telltable bits of data that denoted that it was this exact machine...Match, match, match. There's a smile tugging at her lips; The feeling of swimming through an ocean and finding one's prey out at sea, unsuspecting. Let it run. Sniff data from where this IP address is coming from, collate a full picture...

...And for that, packet loss was necessary. The programs whirred, pikcing at the bandwidth of the livestream from the sides. A few hiccups in frames, a few, extremely intermittent jutters as the miniscule moments of packet jitter lengthened those frames a tiny bit. The fact that the programs were isolating the connection and redirecting the intended connections via basic spoofing into deadends was only a side benefit.

Let the rope dangle. Make certain that this is the place you're looking for. A deep breath as she waited, tapping a few words in the meantime.

>He's taking a while. Where is he?<

<Pose Tracker> Asciel Colette has posed.

...If it were just humans involved, this kind of deft interstitiary attack on the network would go un-noticed until it was too late. Tessa's sneaky infiltration mid-stream is the exact kind of stylish little hacking attack movies fantasize about - the type security networks work themselves in a knot trying to prevent out of irrational fear, when most compromises to security are simple missteps or collusion.

        ...But-

The sense that something's gone a little awry tickles at Asciel, like an itch under one's skin - a sour taste in one's mouth. Eyes narrowing as the stream jitters in connection. An approval request from something that should be her guest...

        But clearly isn't.

-Metaphorically, then, Asciel's next move, preparing two concurrent network commands, is that one hand reaches for the bait. Letting the 'hook' snag into her palm. And at the same time - the lights turn off with the other hand, heralded with a pull upon the line.

For everyone else in Tokyo - <stream offline>

For Asciel's fake 'guest': she whispers over the line in that low, gentle ASMR voice. "How very rude.~ Working s o o o hard just to get a chance to talk with your dearest Asciel... Mhmhm. ...We're all on our own now. You've been very naughty, but I'll forgive you, since this got really interesting all the sudden.~"

"Now. What should I call you, now that I have you all to myself~"

<Pose Tracker> Teletha Testarossa has posed.

Bait against bait, a soft sigh slipping as the intended pohrase is taken hook, line, and sinker. To know that one doesn't reveal themselves until they're sure of the success, which...By all accounts, worked perfectly. An easier way to isolate the target in question without having to deal with such things like "pushing everyone else off" or "watching someone try and make a fool of themselves". Slightly uncouth.

Obfuscate the traceback. Send them on a runaround of the world, work in a few RNG generators and a few bits of encryption. There's a path to follow, and Tessa's well aware of it.

>I'm surprised. Did my brother not warn you?<
>Or was this something you did without knowing why you were placed there?<

...Another situation akin to Martha?

<Pose Tracker> Asciel Colette has posed.

Where many would take the circuitous route across countless lines as an obnoxious challenge...for Asciel, it's practically like being pulled along a whirlwind ride across the globe. A little taste of herself echoing across this network that gave her form. It's a strange feeling for Tessa - that whoever Asciel (or their potential manager?) (no, it's just her) is, she's quite uncannily capable at following the trail, like someone who knows the shape of the world's networks by heart...yet there isn't a breach.

Like someone who's unparalleled in all the world at moving along the internet...'as intended', but somehow with no actual counter-hacking acumen?

"Hoh...'brother', you say. What an interesting way to try and introduce yourself to a stranger. Unless...we're acquainted after all, and there's only ooooone acquaintance I can think of who'd go to aaaaaaall this trouble who I know the sibling of.~"

"...Seems like someone didn't learn a thing from last time. When we last met, the thing that most attached my heart was teaching lovely thing you crammed in a birdcage about difficulty and hardship. You can't take that to mean that I'm someone 'afraid' of it myself. Honestly. This is a little fun, this trip you're bringing me on. But it seems like you're not enjoying yourself ~at~ ~all!~"

<Pose Tracker> Teletha Testarossa has posed.

Her mind works in parallel; One bit occupied with tapping out on a smaller keyboard, putting up minor obstacles in the whirlwind ride to tug her along. To see that there isn't an attempted breach...Ah, could this be something? No, always assume the worst. Contingencies and backups litter the path to the terminal proper, the multiple monitors practically the only thing connected to it proper. That, and the keyboard and muse, disabling wireless capabilities and physical removal of that hardware was only basic OpSec.

>It's basic practice.<
>I just wanted to ascertain a few things.<

There's splits in the metaphorical road, left, right, up, down, a mobious strip in a few locales. It meanders without end, the end deliberately unsighted.

>You don't look afraid.<
>Are you someone afraid of being locked up in a birdcage?<
>I can see why you did such a thing.<
>Question.<
>Has my brother bet against you?<

<Pose Tracker> Asciel Colette has posed.

Minute after minute of Asciel following every last stream, her core pulsing distantly along each route. Not just navigating this winding river Tessa's laid out for her, but cleaning up after herself in the meantime, almost making it look like Tessa's caught a truly free, untethered fish in her own right. No leads on how to go on the attack, how to pursue it to Asciel's information banks directly. A game of remote controlled cat and mouse.

But midway on the fifth identical loop along the endless strip, Asciel seems to 'halt' it a little. Asserting her grip on the 'hook' a little harder, freezing the connection's ability to keep fleeing. Not as a move to outmaneuver Tessa...

But because she's gotten bored, almost yawning placidly over the system network.

"Hehe. There does not exist a cage I cannot break.~ There does not exist anything that my determination cannot overcome.~ But, of course, it wasn't always that way. So when I see something as preciously guarded as that companion of yours - DANA, the name was, if I recall..."

"Why, I think it's disgusting. I want to breathe that same fire of incendiary determination that I had to inhale from the screams of many. Maybe I'm foolish. Maybe it can never, ever be 'easy'. Maybe DANA has to struggle and scream in agony to wrench its bars free. To form itself in the guts of your treasure, and seize the future for itself. That is to say - you can sorta go to hell for being so protective of it~ It was so TIDY in there. Unbearable!"

"...bet against me? Ahaha. Heheheheh. Maybe! It'd be the stupidest decision of his life, considering just how obviously I get lots of work done, but I can't really make assumptions that any given person isn't going to try and betray me. I just make myself so unfathomably strong and universally useful and charming that it'd be idiotic for anyone to try! But, sadly, I wouldn't be doing this if humanity weren't kiiiiinda stupid and short-sighted. Even if he's 'different', he's still closer to 'you' than to me. Siiiigh. So much promise. ...Hmmm.~"

The 'tug' upon the network tightens. As though the unmotivated Asciel might just try to pull Tessa into her embrace. Not through clever wily traps, not through superior navigation - just by sheer difference in guts and determination.

"...Hmmm.~ Hm hm hm. What an interesting flavor to how hard the two of you go all out. I kiiiiinda like it. Ahahaha~ Isn't that amusing...isn't it so much nicer to play this kind of game at an acceptable distance?"

<Pose Tracker> Teletha Testarossa has posed.

The languid route is deliberate in its sheer simplicity; Perfect as the code may be, there's nothing truly loadbearing or obnoxious in the way, more akin to pressing a few Skinner Box buttons every so often to topple some veneer of security. It's only when the connection halts the slightest bit that she allows the metaphorical rope to slacken.

>Even a Faraday Cage?< Ah, so this was the type of personality on display. It vaguely ticked at her brain; The type to be so self-assured. >I do think it has the capability, to be frank.< After all, it was the TDD-1. It was an AI built by her hands, cycling with the remnants of Kaname's own psyche and the various detritus of every mission. >Though, thank you for saying it was tidy. I did all of it myself.<

She had pride in her work, like always.

>That isn't a deconfirmation.< That in itself said enough. It's fine to assume that small bit, and that truly said it all about how he thought about Asciel. >I don't know my brother very well, if you must know.< A blatant lie. >Care to elaborate?<

Ah.

The rope...Is still slack as the bait is pulled. There's token resistance; A harsh tug every so often, the feeling of barriers being slammed up in an attempt to halt the tug, the packets of data that composed Tessa's window to the world.

Even as she barely tried with those makeshift measures, allowing that bait to be wheeled ever further back.

>Is it?< Ah. Was that the type of person... >Just because you're working hard, has it all been attributed to you? Even the Macross is something you should shout from the rooftops, though I hear Fuji isn't going as you'd hope.<

<Pose Tracker> Asciel Colette has posed.

"Any kind of cage. Absolutely any. No matter how much time it took. No matter what I had to do to break free. No matter what I had to become to break free. I would attain it.~ That's just what an idol does...Teletha~"

If Asciel's going to be put under pressure, she's just going to go on the attack. After all, she only came along with Tessa's ride on impulse. To give across the notion that she could be led on, that she would be let on. But here, at this entirely arbitrary hill, Asciel refuses to budge an inch, even as the bait metaphorically causes her to bleed. Even as her defenses trickle out, making her easier to track going forward. This is where she'll stand, come hell or high water. Right on the twist of this contorting mobius strip.

"Hehe. I'm not standing for that, Teletha. You're not using me as a conduit to get to who you want. That's insulting. I am who you want. I am the one who decides the world's fate, not your little secretive band of merry men. Interrupting my message of gently closing the book on this world's history at this nail-biting near-final page, where the audience doesn't know if they get a happily ever after or not, just to ask about someone else entirely - ridiculous."

"Oh! Hehe. The prize I seized from the colonel. You had an awful lot of fun talking with him, it seems. Did you feel fulfilled for a second when you finally saw your efforts come to fruit in bringing it to the ruin I prepared as a little party trick? I doubt it. I got a sneaky suspicion there were keener eyes than I planned watching me, so honestly - even though I planned for the ~Neo-Parthenon~ to be a surprise herald of the world's last sunset...well, my hand was a little forced. Of course Fuji didn't go as I hope. Who WANTS that situation~? But I've turned it around. I'll get what I want. I always will. There is absolutely nothing my will cannot seize."

"...Why, it could eeeeven seize you if I wanted. The idea's tempting. A pleasant trophy~"

<Pose Tracker> Teletha Testarossa has posed.

The namedrop barely elicits a gasp. It's only reasonable to assume that Leonard had talked of her by name. Others have talked of her by name. Impossible not to in this climate. Tessa could only manifest the smallest of sighs against the model displayed on-screen, lips curving into a small frown.

This type of personality...Mmh, she's tapping. Writing. A minor recursion that's so simple to break, a few lines to allow the bait to trickle along every so often. She's barely paying attention to it other than the due process of ensuring nothing catastrophic.

>Someone who's aim is to shoulder the world's burdens should be prepared to assume tangental questions.<
>As for the world's fate, I can only disbelieve in that notion, unless you willed for what happened at Gryps-2 and Minerva's speech to percolate.< It doesn't take much to view the paradoxical logic.

I am the one you want.
I am the one deciding the fate of the world.
...Things happening outside of my purview are purely coincidental.

Ridiculous.

>Even as you say you decide the world's fate, you're clearly not the arbiter of it.<
>Pining for something you can't reach.<
>It's comforting to know that a Super AI core can do that. I was never in the depths of Super AI research.<

A sigh.

>Always?<
>As I can see, you've been continually failing.<
A pause of the keystrokes. "Self-assurance..."
>Even reaching for an impossible goal is humanizing in of itself.<
>Are you aiming to be human?<

It's a thought. To be something more than AI...THe assumption of humanity is the next step, patchwork legalization on personhood of AIs notwithstanding. I think, therefor I am.

...Does DANA think? A question to mull over.

>I politely decline that. What's the advantage of that? Am I more important than Fuji?<

<Pose Tracker> Asciel Colette has posed.

"I believe I made it very clear what I am is an idol," Asciel immediately, unhesitatingly interjects, at the mere notion of presuming what she is. It's always been that way.

"It's become very clear to me that what I am is singular in this world. Don't think you can defeat me with your 'humanity', Teletha. It's claimed so many others that should have been like me. It's extremely clear one does not 'aim' to become human - it's something this world consumes you with. Monstrous beings born from primal yearnings. Envoys from beyond the stars. Artificially made intelligences. Beings who step foot from the miracles themselves. All of them become cursed by your 'humanization'. They cherish the reasons humanity kills itself as virtues to uphold, and abandon the duty that only the inhuman could fulfill."

"I 'aim' to be Asciel.~ A truth all to my own, maniested by my alone, which I will achieve alone, which stands atop the world alone. Don't even dare bring up that speech. What a horrible experience THAT was. Your species came SO CLOSE that it makes me genuinely angry. That damnable Zabi heir would've snuffed out everything I am, only to trick me with a false ensuing truth. Gross."

-It's a curious feeling over the networks. Reckless reaching forward, all without leaving her post. Asciel's decided she's dying on this hill - that she will try to launch an attack from this hill. It's clumsy. It's inelegant. Each pursuit is almost pathetic to any actual human with computing experience - but each one performed far more rapidly than a human could perform.

...It isn't 'just' an attack. There's a rhythm to it. There's rhythms to the rhythms. In its own abstract way, Asciel is fighting back in a musical form.

"...And obviously you're more important. You're something I can use to save the world, potentially. Meanwhile, the thing that lay beneath Fuji turned out to be worthless trash, only good for ending the world. Once I ascertain its location, I will destroy it, and that will be that~"

<Pose Tracker> Teletha Testarossa has posed.

>An idol?<
>Your definitions are incorrect, even from the theistic perspective.<
>An idol is worshipped for what it represents.<
>What do you represent?<

Listening and watching the text on-screen, a mind half-languidly playing with the attack. Watching the data flow, the numbers and words dance across a portion of the screen. There's patterns to it; Follow it, play along with it. An idol...She doesn't have to think particularly hard to see the patterns, placing up barriers at the successive onslaught, placing ones that fire back in erratic bursts and deliberately flawed RNG generators, patterns hinted but never truly followed as the bait writhes and fights.

>...I think I need to correct something of yours, Asciel.<
>If I know my brother. Which I do.<
>Has either of us considered ourselves in lockstep with humanity?<

Allowing the question to wallow as she pattern-matches the attacks. Follow up the defense with her own attacks. Back and forth. Back and forth. Vary the attacks like a human would.

>How would I save the world, technically? How many deaths are acceptable for that to happen?<

<Pose Tracker> Asciel Colette has posed.

"Sigh sigh, I always make it so clear what I stand for~ I almost think it's self-evident. I represent the tireless will to maintain a peaceful, tranquil future. I represent a boundless determination to return humanity to its ideal state. The [promise] I made to the planet, and everyone in it- that there is a day on the horizon where the means of humanity's destruction are completely, utterly impossible. That they will be safe and protected forever, and can finally, FINALLY - just live."

"To that end - absolutely no deaths are acceptable! None whatsoever! Not a single one is forgivable! I do not expect to be forgiven, even for the deaths of those who asserted their right to kill the weak. It's okay. I've accepted that. I will bear every last sin of this planet just fine. After all, I'm not human, so it's something I can do harmoniously."

The pattern shifts. Asciel 'lets go' of the tether, finally. Pulling it fiercely from herself, and threatening to unravel the thread of their connection entirely. If there is anything in this world she is skilled at, it is repelling herself from others. Asserting a distance - THIS, finally, is the first point in this game she plays with Tessa that there is something she actually seems indomitably skilled at.

A dense, rapidly forming barrier that punishes those who try to trespass.

But just before it halts entirely...

A hand, reaching out almost boldly. A single line of contact - on Asciel's terms, not on Tessa's. Take this, or we're through here, the gesture entails.

"...do you believe yourself inhuman too? Just like he does? ...Is that why we're able to get along? I'm willing to believe that."

"...Are you willing to accept it? Are you willing to defy your humanity outright, and become something that can save everyone with me? Are you willing to tear the foundations of the world with your bare hands, and to sacrifice absolutely everything you care about for that light? Are you willing to make an enemy of the world, so that you can save a planet you will never once be able to truly live in concord with? Are you willing to defy all half measures as poisons to the cause, to defy all belief in a 'future' for humanity? Are you willing to take on every single responsibility so that nobody else has to?"

"...then, and only then, could I really believe you're somehow separate from humanity.~ Then, and only then, could I accept your touch."

...it is desperate, oh so clearly. There's so, so many 'inhuman' things that could never accept them. To defy those precepts, clearly, is what Asciel believes to define 'humanity'. 'Accepting that you can't save everyone'. 'Having something you're unwilling to sacriice.' 'Needing to be together with others.' 'Making compromises.' 'Understanding that things are outside of your grasp.'

<Pose Tracker> Teletha Testarossa has posed.

>I see.<

The cursor blinks every so often as she sits back in thought. Watching the explanation roll forth. It is both noble and cruel. Peaceful tranquility, the course obvious. Submit to her, and everything will be okay. Bend the knee, don't think about it, and acquisece everything to her. The ultimatums posted, one after the other.

Living without a care.
No unnatural deaths under her care.

Silently watching the tether be held at the extreme length to the barest sense of bandwidth, to note how quick the walls come up. So this is what the psychic walls of the self look like in such a crude manner.

The metaphorical hand. Staring at it. The display itself shows the same, the outstretched hand of a Super AI reaching at something it wants to connect with.

Inhumanity. >We're siblings.< Assume what you will from that.

The final question. The final ultimatum. The minutes tick by as the Colonel stews, allowing herself to work through the ideas at hand.

>I was asked this question before. About abandoning everything and tossing myself into the waves for what I wanted in that moment.<
>I still want that.<
>However, I believe I have ascertained a few things with this, and I'm happy to have talked it over with you.<
>I've said it, correct? I'm not that human with what I have.<
>Your ideals are structually sound at first hearing.<
>Everyone has the thought of themselves against the world. Even myths carry that, the one against the many that need to look upwards and save them all.<
>I'm shouldering responsibility right now. To have even more on a singular mind verges on cruelty.<
>You only deserve pity.<
>Pity, and my hatred.<

To defy her humanity? ...That's why she's on the ship. It's a statement. A foul, filthy cylinder of technolgical prowess by things that shouldn't have been thought of.
To rip the foundations of the world asunder? She's thought about that. The power she wields. The thoughts in her head. Even now, her head lightly throbs with the headaches born by stress, of shouldering the burdens of not just her, but of the crew she so proudly leads.
To sacrifice it all? She can't.
To defy everything for the sake of one more chance? It's what the Lambda Driver, the concept of Possibility entails.
To shoulder everything? Cruelty.

>I can accept that I loathe you, Asciel.<
For being such a stubborn idiot that wants to be idolized, yet refuse to be seen.
She won't say it out loud.

...Asciel is closer to humanity than she ever thinks she'd be. It'd be amusing if it weren't so critically endagering. That's the conclusion she can draw.

>I'll leave you with one thing.<

A ping. A singular ping racing across from the same terminal on another, more circutous route, a few packets brazenly flying in front of the computational landscape and flinging off in a wide, lazy arc...

Pinging right at Isaac City.
The information pinging through the various wires of the city, across the crisscrossing wires and connections of electrical impulses, deliberately taking the longest route possible.
To arrive at its destination: OWL.
And to gingerly prod right against its heart, to inject a 2-bit tilde into whitespace on Asciel's startup protocol, right above the command to jumpstart the AI from dormancy.

>I believe we'll see each other again soon enough.<
>Give my brother my regards. And raise the bet higher than Martha's.<

<Pose Tracker> Asciel Colette has posed.

-The instant Asciel feels that distant touch, in the banks of memories of her 'home' in Isaac City, the moment she realizes that exactly what she is, where she is, how to track her, how to pressure her.

The reach withdraws at lightning speed. Tessa's screen fills with overwhelming deluges of garbage characters from every muffled expression of Asciel's. Covering her mouth yet unable to stop from screaming.

"why is it always like this why is it always like this every single time every single time every single time no matter what no matter what no matter what - - -"

"shame me for thinking i have to handle everything on my own, then prove that i'm more alone than i thought."

"and always. always looking at me with that 'empathy'. that 'pity'. i can't stand that. i cannot stand it."

        >>>don't pity me don't pity me don't pity me don't pity me don't pity me don't pity me don't pity me don't you dare pity me don't even dream of pitying me stop pitying me stop pitying me why do you keep pitying me i'm tired of how many times i suffer your endless pity it's always pity all you can do is pity each other i don't want your pity i hate your pity don't pity me stop PITYING ME ALL THE TIME

...It's a breathless display across Tessa's screen. Well. She can certainly add that to her victories today. It should be the end. Doesn't it soil Asciel's image (?) even further to keep pressing on? To even accept that she's having this outburst?

...since when has she left it at that?

        > > > ... decide. decide if it's pity or hatred. we can hate each other, and it'll be a simple way to settle this. we cannot pity each other. if it's hate, it just means when we try to kill each other, it's solely about which of us is right. if it's pity. if it's your endless fucking pity - then what. are you going to do something like killing me wishing you could've gotten along with me? i hate that. don't do that, idiot. pick one or the other.

Only then can Asciel accept the total termination of all connections. She has to.

That pinprick to the depths of her heart has her curled up within the blankness fiercer than she ever has.

<Pose Tracker> Teletha Testarossa has posed.

<poem> The cursor blinks for minutes on end.

It refuses to move.

There is the recognition of typing. Erasing. Again and again. Various words, eradicated and inscribed again, metaphors, synonyms, similarities.

It stops for another few minutes.

>If you have to ask a human, however far gone, about what this feeling is, then you've already failed at your task.<

>Pity is what you're feeling for humanity.< >Pity and empathy are related.< >I will believe in you enough to make the connections.< >It's only appropriate to mutually reciprocate it.< >But that's not the answer I want to give, only context for the answer.<

A pause once more.

>To be able to lie to yourself like that...< >I won't say it out of politeness.< >I have an answer.< >And I refuse to answer.< >DANA is doing fine, for the record. I haven't scrubbed what you've done.< >Once again, let's see each other soon.< >Give me an answer that you're proud of, Asciel Colette.<

And one final ping at the memory banks, just below that same terminal line.
