Background
0072: Rita is born in Australia. Her parents are killed in the One Year War, leaving her orphaned. After this, she meets her closest friends, Jona and Michelle, also orphans of the OYW.
0079: While on a school trip with her friends, Rita has a vision. She only tells Jona and Michelle what she saw of the upcoming tragedy of Operation British. In truth, Rita foresees everything before her, up until Zoltan Akkanen’s attempt at destroying the Earthsphere with his mega-weapon (plot pending Zoltan’s player’s decisions).
Despite knowing taking action on her vision would result in her own suffering and “death”, Rita speaks up with the help of Jona and Michelle. Working together, they manage to convince enough people to evacuate an Australian town, saving everyone from the falling colony. The three became known as the “Miracle Children”.
0080: Just as she foresaw, Rita and her friends are taken by the Titans and sent to Augusta Laboratory. They refuse to reveal who the real Newtype is, leading to all three of them being experimented on. They would endure many forms of invasive and traumatic testing. Narrative explicitly shows medical and surgical alteration, written tests, and some kind of device they’re restrained in before being activated. Using context from other depictions of Augusta Labs, this machine was likely attempting to alter their brainwaves to draw out their Newtype potential.
While there, she connected with and befriended fellow test subjects Shelby Korts (arriving at the lab in 0086/87) and Nanai Miguel (arriving at the lab in 0084/85).
Despite not having spent much time with Shelby, Rita did her best to take the young girl under her wing. Rita was able to communicate telepathically with Shelby, and Shelby trusted her enough that she was willing to take Rita’s hand. This was a remarkable act of trust for the normally reticent and violently defiant Shelby.
Nanai and Rita spent several years together at Augusta. As Nanai cared for the other young women at the facility, she also tried to care for Rita, something Rita was truly grateful for. They had – and have – a strong bond, strong enough that Nanai was willing to risk her own safety and well-being to allow the Miracle Children the chance to escape..
0085: With Nanai’s assistance, Rita, Jona, and Michelle successfully escaped the lab. Nanai felt too responsible for the other children to join them, but facilitated their escape. The Miracle Children were on the run for a few days, but were recaptured when they stole some food from a grocery store. Vitaly is responsible for tracking down the children and returning them to Augusta. The older woman is unmoved by the children’s pleas, but not cruel to them.
0087: Michelle overhears a doctor discussing the Titans’ imminent defeat and plans to experiment on the children in a more invasive manner. This event terrifies her to the point that she arranges with Jona to reveal Rita as the true Miracle Child. However, she lied to him, which resulted in Rita being taken to a new location for further testing, Michelle being sent to Luio & Co., and Jona being kept at Augusta. Tragically, Augusta would be shut down only one year later.
The new laboratory Rita was taken to is the same one Yuliana was altered in, now known as The Institute for Continuing Study. It was intended on being a temporary arrangement until the Titans could regain power, but became permanent once they were defeated. Rita’s project line was Helenus Rebirth (a reference to Kipling’s poem, Rebirth, and Helenus of Greek Mythology.)
Rita was unfailingly kind toward Yuliana, even when treated badly. Despite her anger and jealousy toward the powerful Newtype, Yuliana assured Rita that once Rita stabilized, she'd be able to live a normal life in the REA. Rita knew this would never come to pass but appreciated the compassionate gesture all the same. Rita considers Yuliana a friend, though she can't help but pity Yuliana for her forcefully de-awakened state.
0093: After Yuliana’s actions as a saboteur gathered too much attention from the Federation, the Institute traded them Rita in exchange for this incident being covered up. The Federation was eager to gain a powerful Newtype with no one looking for her. Rita was subjected to further experimentation and testing, with the goal of eventually weaponizing her as a pilot for a Psychoframe unit.
Vitaly was responsible for training Rita to properly pilot in a 16-week boot camp. The veteran was fair but unbending, and Rita’s skills increased immensely thanks to her guidance.
0095: Rita is assigned to pilot the Phenex Gundam, the moment she’s waited for all these years. Once the Phenex is taken into space to test, Rita ascends as a Newtype, momentarily allowing the Phenex to transform into its Awakened state. Using the Phenex’s shields, Rita destroys her handlers’ ships, killing nearly everyone aboard.
After this event, the Phenex took off into space, vanishing completely. Until now!
