Axis was an asteroid owned by retreating Principality of Zeon forces, and used as a base from the end of the One Year War until the end of the Second Neo Zeon War. The Federation sold it back to Char Aznable in 0093 in the hopes of brokering a ceasefire with Char's Newborn Neo Zeon, but he had planned to drop it on Earth from the start.
