Nanomachines constitute any machine smaller than 10 micrometers. While not a novel field of research per se, nanomachines that do things that actually matter are a comparatively new innovation. Since the Devil Gundam incident in 0092-0093, the average citizen is inherently at least somewhat distrustful of any nanomachine concept that 'automatically' does something, rather than being human-directed.
